People have a high amount of faith in science (I would gauge that no single individual has counted 4 billion stars), but the wet paint sign is different in that it is transient (the paint will dry at some stage) and it is reliant on a specific individual (the signwriter, usually the painter) as opposed to a consensus among experts using well known and often practiced processes.
I know there is no faith used in scientific process, but if a scientist has an opinion that gets into the public media, it is given way too much credence by the general public, to the point it will be quoted as a scientific fact through chinese whispers. I am not sure how may stars are cataloged but I doubt it is 4bil, this is scientific opinion or conjecture. I doubt someone has counted them, and it would not be fact using a computer to try and count stars from images as there is an error rate. That is not questioning how reasonable the opinion is, but it is not fact.
Oh yeah that really is just an excuse that most people are just plain dumb, some are curious, and some like to put a permanent impring on paint (like a fingerprint) to mark the moment.

haha, so true. guess its just wanting to know if its true or a lie, so touching it is the only way to find out and to be satisfied that it is truely wet.

because...you always want to do something that you know your not supose to do. it goes back to when we were all little kids, and your parents would tell you not to touch a hot stove, or not put something in your mouth...and you did...because you are curious! its all part of the nurture vs. nature theory.

The police are well aware of this, and use it as a trap to get people's fingerprints.

4,000,000,000 stars? why is that?
why should someone believe, in the 1st place?
and there is no such thing as "faith to science"
faith is not required in science.
if faith gets mixed in, it's not science. it's religion.
your question is one of those exploited to undermine science.
