Well it is never too early to call them by their real names.
What do you call an apple? An apple right...just start with the real names and it won't be a big shock when they learn the real names ro hear them for the first time.

You should really just teach your child the correct bio term for each body part: penis, vagina, breast, anus, scrotum, "butt" for buttocks, etc
My 18-month old already uses these terms. There is nothing rude about them using these terms, they are in fact the proper terms. I have always read from doctors and other professional authority-types (school counselors, law enforcement, etc) that it is really a diservice when parents teach their children "nicknames" for important body parts -- imagine the doctor in an emergency situation trying to find out what it means that a child's "bits" "minnie" or whatever these other suggestions were (I have NO idea what any of them mean, never heard the before except for bottom, and willie...). Worse, it the child just says "private part" for everything -- the doctor may need to know very specifically a sympton of the penis, scrotum, anus, etc.
Or if your child (God forbid) ever needs to describe somebody that touched them or something they saw, again they should have proper terms available to them.
Using the correct terminology also sets the tone for you as parents being able to talk frankly and without veil of embarrassment with your children; by avoiding the terms "breast" "vagina" "scrotum" you are conveying to your children that thereis something odd, or wrong, or shameful about these body parts, which of course there is not!

My son who is 3 1/2 has always called his bits his willy. It is fairly basic, not rude, and if he says it at pre-school will not have the other kids laughing at him.
My daughter is 2 and I am sort of struggling with a nice name for her bits. So far it just tends to be bottom, but that doesn't really differentiate between the front and the back. Vagina just sounds so clinical.

we call a penis a penis, a vagina a vagina, breasts are boobs, an anus is an anus or a butt, and my 3 yr old knows what that little bobbly thing is, her clitoris. She though it was a penis, so we told her the correct word.
Did you hear about the lady who threw a fit becasue while walking past a theater that was showing the Vagina Monologues, they had the audacity to actually advertise the show, her niece asked her what a vagina was, and the aunt freaked out and had the theater change the name on the marquee to The HooHaa Monologues. The name has since been changed back, but I wonder a child who can read should know the proper name for her "bits" don;t you think?

totally understand, until they are a little bit older the proper names are a bit to rough around the edges, and when they are a little bit older,it won't be a shock to find out what they are really called, like some people seem to think.Couple of suggestions for you,for the boys; tail ,and for the girls; front bum or flower ,flower pot.Good luck

When I was a little girl we called the vagina either an Annie or a Minnie (don't know where either originate from) and a penis was a willy. I don't know why but when I am washing my son (who is 1) i call his willy his 'bum bits'. I'm not sure why or where this came from, but it has just stuck.

I told my children the correct term for each body part, as I think its important they know. We use juta instead of vagina in company. My kids are girls and so we dont need to refer to penis's. Although they have witnessed baby boy's at nappy time and have been curious, and I just call it a penis.
My friends use the term willy or PP.

my kids dont speak our native tongue and neither do I but we've always refered to them in our language. So maybe you can find another language or just some fun name? They eventually learn the real names fast but most of the time those real names are never really prefered to be used anyways until they are much much older.

My boy calls his bits his willy and my girl called hers her fou fou.
Listening to other mothers i have heard... frou frou, minny, minky, Whistle, front bottom etc. Some times by three year old calls his his big snake monster! But I dont use that one. LOL. Iwould say they both know the correct terms but this is what they chosen to call their part.
