i took her to the dr's last fri, that is when i learned she has a bad cold, and an ear infection. The next day i noticed this little lump under her ear; on the same side of her neck that her ear infection is. It is about as big as the tip of my finger, the Dr's felt all over her neck and did not say anything i would like to assume she felt it and did not say anything because it is a swolen gland or something. but i am still a little worried, anyone else experenced this?

I would assume it is a swollen lymph node which is part of the filtration system the body uses to get rid of disease and toxins. If she is on antibiotics it should go down as the infection clears. If in doubt see the doctor again to get his pinion.

Stress in the parents often gets passed on to children causing colds and infections. (This is my opinion.)

If the doctor felt the lump and was not concerned, it may be a swelled lymph node, and the swelling usually goes away by itself in a short while, but may, in some cases, take a long time to go away. Swelled lymph nodes often occur with a bad cold and ear infection.

Is the lump warm? Is there swelling? Is there pain? Is it red? These are signs of infection and infection is not good. It needs attention.

If there is no infection or swelled lymph node and the skin is a normal color, it could be a cyst. A cyst is like a blackhead only it has no head or way of escape so it grows larger into a lump and inside is the white matter like a blackhead. A cyst needs to be opened so it won't grow larger. Just a sterile needle is needed to open it, then it will just take care of itself after a day or two, and then the matter can come out.

If the lump is not a cyst or an infection or a swelled lymph node, it could be a tumor. A tumor is a tissue growth that shouldn't be there. A benign tumor is harmless and may go away by itself. A malignant tumor is serious problem. Personally, I have never had a tumor,

This is information may be more than you wanted to know. It is the order used to determine what a lump is.

My daughter is 20 months and had the same situation a few months ago in december. I too felt the lump and scheduled an appt. My doctor said that it is a lymph node. It filters out the junk from the infection and helps fight the infection. He said that throughout childhood they have lymph nodes sticking out all over but they are most obvious in and around the neck and head and the only time he'd worry is if they are larger than a grape. My daughter still has the lymph nodes (2) sticking out, but they aren't swollen and they aren't a cause for concern. Just leave them alone and they'll go away eventually! Good luck with the ear infection.

Yes, it is probably a swollen gland. Keep an eye on it and it should gradually go away as the cold and ear infection does.
I'm guessing she was given Amoxicillin or some antibiotic. Be sure to give that until it is all used up. Good luck!

My friends daughter had the same thing happen, but she didn't know about the infection...all she saw was the lump and took her straight to hospital.
This shows that lumps are occassionally part and parcel of the ear infection.
If it hasn't gone down by the time the infection has gone, get a doctor to check it out, or go to the docs anyway to ask about it, but I would think that it is just caused by the infection.

Try not to worry.

It is a swollen lymph node gland which is assisting in pulling the infection out of the ear. Make sure she is on an antibiotic to get rid of the infection. Also make sure that once the infection is cleared up that the water drains from her ears because water lying in there kills the cillia which can cause deafness.

This is normal when a child becomes ill. She may not have had the swollen gland yet when the doctor felt her neck. It is not uncommon for the glands to swell a few days after the child becomes ill. It can happen even if they are on antibiotics. Give it a week to go away. If it doesn't, call the doctor back.

Call the DR. Ask for the RN to check her chart to see if the DR noted the lump. If he did ask size and concern questions. If he did not ask for a recheck. Call me a worry wart but a friend had a swollen node with an ear ache. Ear Ache went away. Nod had to have surgery. Only your DR knows the difference.

There are lymph nodes under the ear and sometimes lymph nodes will swell when you have an infection. I'm not a doctor, but I wouldn't worry about it. The swelling should go away when the infection is gone.

My Son had something similar and I left the lump for a while till he was better then took him back to the doctor's. He told me that it was scar tissue from the infection and that it would eventually go and needless to say it did. If your worried mention it the next time you go to the doctor's and he or she will be able to put your mind at rest.
