Did your parents spank you? Did it leave permanent scars or did it make you a better person?

Yes I was spanked as a child. No permanent scars here. My parents like my husband and I were very fair. We were never spanked for annoying or childish stuff, but for direct defiance, life threatening acts, or doing something we were clearly warned not to do (the warning included being told what would happen if we did do it). I love my parents very much, and I totally see now that I am a mom how important doing the "hard stuff" is in parenting.
I say use spanking if other methods break down. I am not against using time outs, 1-2-3, reward charts, grounding.... or all the other new age methods. However if those methods break down, that's when spanking comes into play.

I got spanked and no it didn't leave any permanent scars (emotional or physical) I honestly think it made me a better person. when you have discipline in your home as a child, you are more respectful as an adult. Being spanked didn't teach me to be violent nor did I feel that my parents were hypocrites for spanking me and then telling me not to hit. What I knew was that if I misbehaved, I was going to get my butt busted, so I didn't misbehave. I wasn't perfect but when you know the consequences of your actions you tend rethink what you are about to do.
My parents used many forms of discipline, grounding, taking away priveleges, I even had to write 1000 sentences once. I was 10 when I received my last spanking, after that punishment was delivered in one of the above forms.

yes I was spanked as a child and no it didn't leave any permanent scars, physically or psychologically. I think it made me a better person. Actually I think I should have gotten more spankings than I did.

My mom spanked me. I was 5 and it worked. Only got the one. I have kids and some of them have been spanked. All but the second one. The first one told him what a spanking was and he decided then and there he would avoid those at all costs. 7 kids total, they have had less than 10 spankings between them. It is not the answer to discipline it is the last resort to a hard question of what will get through to them best in the situation at hand.

Of course I was spanked. Not often, but I certainly remember several of those times. And, Yes, I spanked my kids, also. Not often, but when telling them no didn't work they were spanked. Permanent scars? You have to be kidding. They are great people and the friggin government needs to stay out of it and let people raise children the way we were raised.

Yes. Mum & Dad were pretty fair though, I don't think I was spanked past about the age of 8. After that it was a stern lecture. Obviously you don't want to go breaking wooden spoons or anything. At an early age a light smack is pretty scary. I think it earns the respect a parent needs to keep an orderly household and at least you won't be the one at party whose kids are tearing around hurting all the other kids and generally pissing off all the adults. I think a little respect is a healthy thing. Most importantly you need to have an open and loving relationship with you kids but do not let them walk all over you. If they walk all over you they will walk all over everybody else. My parents are two of my best friends!

My parents spanked me way too much. My dad claims that he didn't spank me enough. Sometimes it would leave bruises and scars for a couple of weaks.

Yes I was spanked up until I graduated. I know most guys weren't but I was. I was very small for my age. It made a permanent mark on my life by making me a better person!

Yes I got spanked. I dont know if it made me a better person, but it didnt leave any permanent scars. Thats a load of horseshit that it leaves emotional damage. It teaches kids at a young age, that when you do something bad, there is a consquence (a 5 minute timeout is not a consequence to a 4 year old).

Yes I was spanked by my first stepdad from 7-14. Yes it scarred me emotionally but I've gotten over it.
