I woke up one morning nearly 2 years ago with a sore thumb. In only a few days I was waking up just like your father has . The pain was incredible.

I have since been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and palindromic rheumatism.

Your father needs to see a doctor. If he has RA, with that many joints affected simultaneously, I can confirm from personal experience that it will progress rapidly. My doctors were stumped and within 6 weeks of the onset I was hospitalized for 4 days to treat the pain and swelling. Eventually, a rheumatologist diagnosed me.

It's a serious disease, nothing to fool with.

Only his doctor can help him. He needs to find out what this is for sure and start treating it as soon as possible. Good luck to both of you.

Edit: Gout usually affects the big toe. It would be unlikely to affect so many joints at once.

It is possible that having slept REALLY wrong an undefined thing in the skellatal system went wrong. For it to be muscles and effect that much is nearly impossible. If there is a chiropractor who uses an activator available to you try that, if not one who uses wedges. I hesitate to recommend one who does manual manipulation when it covers such a large area.
Technically for it to be arthritis the joints need to be red, somewhat swollen, and warm to the touch as well as painful.
Gout also needs to be red, painful and quite swollen.

other - Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas (natural muscle relaxers) daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

It sounds to me like he could have gout. I suggest he go to the doctor and have a uric acid level blood test. If this is high, it's a sure sign of gout.

it could be Rheumatoid Arthritis or Fibromyagia. He should see a doctor to test for these conditions. They can do some things to help ease the pain and stiffness.

Sounds more like Rhuematoid Arthritis. He should see his physician and request the blood testing to verify it. There is medicine that can ease it.
