Hey bballchick....I have only had the outsides of my biceps tattooed but the closest thing I can compare it to .....it's like having tiny little sparks falling down on you over and over. They go out as soon as they hit the skin...but there's always more of them falling and hitting.. It doesn't hurt so much as it is annoying. The next day (and for about 4 to 6 days later) its going to feel like a sunburn. The key is to relax, listen to music or talk to a friend to distract you. Use the best artist you can find. go to my 360 page and click on the dragon tattoo in my blog (my secret addiction). My dragon was 12 hours old in that picture...no scabs..no bleeding.
I am doing 8 to 9 hours under the needles this month so I've been doing my research.....here is the best article I could find on pain as charted by body location
http://www.tattooz.net/default.cfm?sitem...
I hope this helps

The pain really is not that severe. I have 14 tattoos and each time it gets better.
It depends alot on where you get it. You said your ankle. The vibrations of the needles will be felt in your bone and it will cause a little more discomfort than if it was just a fleshy part of your body.
You will obviously feel the needle. Just remember the outline is always the worst because of the type of needle they use. But if it isn't an intricate tat they won't be using it alot. As far as the shading goes, it is not as bad. For shading they may use 2-8 needles that are set together. It makes it so that they shading is quicker.
There is nothing I can say that will accurately describe the feeling.
I can tell you that you will feel the vibration and heat the gun.
Remember, pain is part of the process :)
Also your tattooist can help guide you through the process of selecting an appropriate tattoo for you.
Good luck.

first off it depends on how high of a pain tolerancy you have and if you can stand pain which will determine if and what spots will really hurt when getting tattoed...The closer you get to a bone the more it hurts....I am getting my whole calf done all away around and i just had my ankle worked on a few days ago and it was not that bad untill he got close to the bone then it started to hurt some but not like i thought it would...The first 10 minutes or so it the worst but after that its a walk in the park as your not use to the fact of getting struck by a bunch of needles and after a while your body will get use to it and then it will become more anyoing of a felling then a painfull one...with me after a while i start to enjoy the pain and it fells good to were i dont want him to stop at times and the funny thing about it is I HATE NEEDLES..

i wouldn't say a tattoo feels like a bee sting. i HATE getting stung and would rather get tattooed any day.
to me it feels like getting scratched by a cat. it is a constant sting like when you get water in a new cut or something.
depending on where you get tattooed depends on the level of pain. i have never had my ankle tattooed but i'm sure it's not pleasant. my husband certainly doesn't think so. and i have had my feet tattooed and it wasn't very fun either.

To me it felt like a cat scratching a sunburn over and over. It was more annoying with only one or two excruciating moments (very brief moments) Seeing as you want to get the tattoo on your ankle it will probably be a little more painful, than say your upper arm, because it would be on your bone. Getting tattoos on boney areas tends to be more painful, but it is 2 hours of pain for a beautiful tattoo that lasts forever. GO FOR IT!!
Good Luck!

It hurts, but I have a decent tolerance of pain, so I felt it was more of an annoying kind of pain.
But when he got to my lower back (I am getting my whole back done I have like six sessions left to go) it tickled just as much as it hurt and it took all my power to hold still it tickled so much.
He got to my side right between my shoulder blade and my armpit and said "Brace yourself, I'm told by a lot of people this area is painful" so I braced myself and it felt the same to me as the other parts of my back, and I told him I'd take that over the tickling any day!
When I got my wrists done it was the same amount of pain as anywhere else, up until about an inch from my hand, that part hurt more, that area right... well it's like that inch of your arm where your arm and your hand meet. The skin there is really thin and there are tendons underneath and veins. I would still take that over the tickling.
I'm way more afraid of the tickling because when it tickles really bad you twitch and you can't hold still, you just can't help it, and I was worried it would cause him to mess up, but he did great anyway and it's coming along so pretty =). We're going to have to do more shading on my lower back though before all is said and done and that will mean more tickling =/.

It's really not that bad at all. The outline needle and the color fill-in needles feel different. The first minute or so of each is the worst, but even then it's only mildly annoying. It's definitely not enough to be worried about or enough to make you jump up and ask the artist to stop. It's really hard to compare it to anything else. A hot cat scratch is the comparison I've heard most often, but I think that cat scratches are worse. It's really not enough pain to get worked up over.

its more annoying then actually painful while having it done, afterwords for me is another story I swell pretty bad and its sore but that usually only lasts a few days... I guess it could be compared to bee stings like others have said but that's going to differ from person to person I am a baby when it comes to pain but yet I have 8 tats

well it all depends on where you get the tattoo I got mine on my shoulder blade and there was alot of stinging scraping and burning sensations just imagine it. it didnt feel good but its worth the pain I love tattoos they are a great way to express yourself just make sure its what you want before you get it. and remember the needle goes in you skin a thousand times a second. the tattoo i got on my lower calf near my ankle i didnt even feel it like i said it depends on where you get it. if you get it over a bone its going to hurt more if you get it in a sensitive area its going to hurt more. pinch yourself really hard and multiply the pain in a million spots thats as close to a tatoo you can get without actually getting one
