There is an old German saying which prescribes how to divide a cake between two people and ensure that both of them are satisfied. The translation is: “One divides, the other chooses”

Can you devise a procedure so that n persons can divide a cake between them and each one is satisfied that he has obtained a fair piece of the cake?

Have the n-1 cut a piece for himself then have n-2 divide what is left then have n-3 choose from the 3 pieces, n-2 from the 2 pieces, and n-1 gets what is left. This should work no matter how many n's you have.

Cut the cake twice by cutting straight through to the other side twice, thus it's cut in 4. The person cutting gets second choice. Regardless of the cut, there will be 2 equal pieces and 2 equal pieces left over. The mirror of each will match each other.

Sound like a plan?

Ask a third person to divide the cake and tell that person s/he will get a large reward if both pieces weigh exactly the same.

NO NO NO! HERE IS THE ANSWER. LET THE FIRST PERSON CUT THE CAKE IN HALF. THEN LET THE SECOND PERSON CUT THE CAKE INTO QUARTERS. THE SECOND PERSON THEN PICKS A QUARTER AND THE FIRST PICKS A QUARTER AND THEN BACK TO THE 1ST PERSON PICKS A QUARTER AND THEN THE 2ND.
