Would you consider an adult cat or must it be a kitten?

Go to all local shelters/pounds/Humane Society type places.

Your first option should be adoption. Buying from a pet store is not "bad" per se BUT the shelter have oodles of cats/kittens that have a time clock ticking away on their euthanasia dates. Unless it is a no kill/long term shelter. Ask.

This will sound funny BUT I have gotten all 4 of my lovely kitty's this way.
Go to a "bad" area of town. Look around/ask around and you WILL find tons of strays.
You will usually have a option of sizes/colors BUT it is a gamble. Usually they are not medically cleared for a new home. You'll need to neuter/spay/vaccinate/test for FIV+FLK yourself...
There may also be an issue with their temperment/socialization.

To me it was worth it seeing as these cats needed the home more so than the others. Like I said rescuing/re homing is not everyones cup of tea either. Some prefer a cat coming home fully loaded so to speak.

Call your local Police Department ask for the numbers to the area shelters/pounds. If that pound does not suit your cat needs get more numbers from them to call. They will oblige. They too want to see these sweet animals in good homes. Forever homes.

Please make certain your new kitty gets ALL of his/her medical care before they step foot out of your home into the yard (if they are to be outside cats) Inside or not get your cat fixed/vaccinated.

Also read newpapers to see who may be selling/giving away kittens/cats and check your community bulletin boards for similar signs.

Maybe you will reconsider and accept an adult kitty if you can't find a kitten. Big kitty's need homes quicker seeing as they are usually the first on the "euthanise due to non placement" lists.

Please try to avoid pet stores and breeders.

Good luck sweet pea.

Let us know how it turns out for you and your (hopefully) new family member. A cat is a part of your family and should be treated as such after all.

if you want a free cat look in the newspaper or Go to your local pet shop to see if they have a board to list pets on. If you want to adopt a pet from the shelter to keep it from being killed you go to your local animal shelter and ask to see the cats and kittens.
