Honestly, I think that Americans are so set in their ways that it's just incredibly hard for them to just "Put down the damn burger!" so to speak.
Americans have been told by fast food industries for AGES AND AGES that their food will make them happy, their families happy, and hey, they even dole out toys to little children to distract them while their parents scarf down a greasy burger.
People still eat fast food, EVEN though they know it is bad for them BECAUSE:
A. Most people are working tough jobs and think they do not have enough time to prepare healthy meals for their families, when what they are actually doing is just dooming their children to a lifetime of practical obesity by allowing them to make poor food choices early in life
and
B. Even though all of the information against fast food CLEARLY states that it is bad for ALL people, Americans are just so damn used to driving thru or going in to fast food joints that the habit is virtually impossible to break.
It's really a sad, sick cycle because millions of Americans are likely to either cut their life spans short because of poor eating choices, or end up with terrible, incurable diseases like diabetes.

Because of a few reasons
It is quick and convenient
We enjoy the taste because of high sugar and fat content
Additives produce endorfins in our brain which make us feel happy
They are cheaper than restraunts
Also, think of this. We know driving a car could kill us, because it is the most unsafe mode of transport, but we still do it. Because it helps us. Fast food helps us in other ways, it can take your mind of problems and quick
However, with this said I am still completely against fast food because, for example, McDonalds Big Mac: Cost around 12p to make they sell it for aroun $4. It contains enough sugar to be classified as a dessert. It has the same percentage of fat as a stick of butter.
IT IS A HEART ATTACK IN A BUN AND SOME HOT-SHOT EXECUTIVE IS MAKING A FORTUNE OF OTHER PEOPLES MISFORTUNE AND HEALTH PROBLEMS

Many reasons:
1. Not EVERYONE has seen Supersize Me, and are not educated on how bad fast food is for your body
2. It's cheap
3. It's fast
4. Food addictions
5. It's a customized meal for 1 person (for single people, this is sometimes more feasible than cooking a meal).
Perhaps school children should be educated on nutrition, if they already aren't? I know when I was in school (public) we learned nothing about nutrition. That would be a start...

Because a big juicy double burger with bacon and fries is just so damn good. We don't need to change our eating habits, we need to change our exercise habits. If we were more active and healthy, we could eat what we wanted. So stop blaming the food and get off you lazy asses and do something!

The food is promoted as being happy, healthy and fun. Some people consider a Big Mac as containing 4 food groups (meat, bread, vegetable and dairy!). Fast food raked in $134 billion in 2005-- you can imagine what they spend promoting their foods! Pizza is fun, KFC is a square meal, burgers are the American way.

Because we live in an instant society who does not want to wait for food. Also we are extremely busy. Fast food is... well, fast. I don't even like it and I find myself eating it at times.

Convenience and an addiction to fats, carbs and sugars. Ever go on a carb-free diet and feel like crap? Hard cycle to break.
