I dont know about Arabic but in Hindi it means "great" as in MahaDeva, Great God, another name for Shiva. It's also a great song by Anoushka Shankar.

I think you might be thinking marHaba, in Arabic. Salaam means peace and is a muslims greeting, Muhammad said they should use it in the Quran.
