Child development is something that is different in EVERY child. If your son shows a bent for coloring he is simply expressing himself in a way he finds 1. enjoyable 2. a way that he finds brings praise (you should be praising every picture) and children do need the recognition. Art is simply a means of expression and to him it is fun. I have 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls and each is vastly different than the other. Enjoy this talent he exhibits and encourage him in whatever he shows interest in. He will only be young once and some of his "Best" pictures are the ones he will DRAW for you now. Keep them for the years ahead...I have things from mine that I treasure and yes I am a very proud father!!! The saying should be "you are never too young" for showing talent and self expression. ENCOURAGE it please!!!!! He may be the next great painter of our time!!! Good luck and enjoy!!

I don't think that there is a a right or wrong age. At 12 months we started giving my boyfriends daughter crayons and markers, but started letting her know that it is NOT okay to color anything but the paper. If she does we take away the paper and give her her aqua doodle or the special markers that only color on paper. She is now 18 months and pretty much has the idea. When we say "paper only" she will color on the paper. But if she does color on herself or another object she still gets them taken away. good luck, pictures from toddlers are the best :)

No that's not too young, kids love scribbling. Once he is talking more, he will say what he is drawing and make a story of it - that was one of my favourite parts of my son when he was little.
You can have him choose a coloring book, like at the dollar store, so he can "draw and colour" over the pictures, even though he won't be really coloring. It's just nice for them to be able to flip through the pages and see the pictures - and you can teach him at the same time!

You can start them at different ages. My son was coloring at 8 months but my daughter eats the markers and the crayons and is 13 months old so I wont let her yet

never too young to experiment with things like that - as soon as they show an interest get them a scribbling book (they are not co ordinated enough to colour between the lines as yet) and different colours to scribble with
however he is too young to be formally taught to read and write
i am sure he will tell you himself when he is ready to start learning what all those scribbles that adults set so much store by
my son was 21 months when he indicated he wanted to hear what all the names were for those letters on my jumper - before he was 2 he liked to be taken to see number plates and could name most of the numbers and letters for himself and he knew the make of almost every car that drove past (and was usually right!)

Coloring is great if your son enjoys it! Any age (with supervivsion) is fine. To them it's play and a fun way to imitate their favorite person...You. But to the adults, it's developing hand-eye coordination, strengthening the muscles in his hands , and it's a good "quiet" activity to enjoy together. (Playdoh can do these same things as well.)
Color books can be good for language development, if you discuss the picture together while you're coloring. At 14 months, just watch that he doesn't get small pieces in his mouth.
They are so precious at that age....enjoy him.

If he enjoys drawing, then I think it's fine whatever the age. My boys have been drawers from toddlers.
And if the markers can only draw on paper you have nothing to worry about! Great invention :-)

not at all too early, I think it's great that he likes to doodle. Mine were probably a year and a half when they began coloring with crayons. They're 3 now and are writing their names and drawing me some adorable pictures. Make sure to save all his artwork :)

get them whenever you want.
I take my daughter to a mother/baby group that has a colouring time involved for all ages. I think that 14 months is okay to let him have a go, but when you graduate to normal crayons and colouring books, be warned that your walls may suffer!
