I have a 4 year old cat that I adopted 2 years ago. The first year he was fine. Only in the last couple of months Denver came down with some serious urinary tract infections. He also started attacking my boyfriend BRUTALLY during the time he started getting sick. I'm talking wrapping his legs around his leg and scratching and biting. Often he eve drew blood. My boyfriend does not live with me but had been around more often in the past and Denver was very nice to him....even nicer than he was to me at the time. He NEVER hurts me or any of my other female roommates. What can I do to stop Den from attacking my boyfriend? as we are going to be moving in together soon and I don't want my boyfriend to be afriad of my cat....he REALLLLY hurts him!

I heard an interesting clip on the radio this morning driving to work - It was people calling in because their pets (Dogs and Cats) were attacking their boyfriends/girlfriends, only come to find out that they were being cheated on. There were several callers that said at one point, their pet was really nice to the guy/gal, then all of a sudden, turned and attacked them and shortly after, they found out that he/she had been cheating.

Make sure this isn't the case before you move in with him!

cats have various reasons to attack...if the cat is only attacking one person there is a reason for it....cats all hold grudges forever....if you are mean to a cat even once they will never forget it, they might forgive you but you should still watch your back....also, if he is around any other cats, especially a male cat, he will have a residual smell.....here is a solution...get your boyfriend to donate an old shirt or something that he has had for along time...give that shirt to your cat, start by putting it near where your cat sleeps and then move it around in the house so his smell soaks in, let him get used to the smell of him, that will help hugely! also dont let your cat even give him the evil eye, cats are very independent but will follow the leader of the pride...blow on him loudly but not too closely, this mimics the hiss of mother cat and will let him know you are not happy...stop all attempts at aggression from him within a few seconds.....and lastly, you can always win over a cat with food...have the boyfriend feed him when he is there and let him take over all treat functions...that will help too.....

see the vet about his urinary tract infections. if that is not causing Denver to act this way to your boyfriend break up with your boyfriend and get a new one that gets along with cats better!

Well, here's a thought. You said you adopted him as an adult - do you know anything about his background? My cat is very loving around women, but runs and hides from men. I suspect he was abused as a kitten by a man. OR...it could just be that he's protecting his "property" - YOU!

I had such a situation once. If yours is anything like mine, then you'd better trust the cat's judgement. My cat hated my partner at the time; I think he was trying to protect me. I should have paid attention

Even though chronoligically it does'nt make sense, your cat is associating his pain and discomfort with your boyfriends appearence. Before him = no pain, his arrival = pain. Let your boyfriend feed your cat and talk to him and try to step back if you want them to get on. Patience is the key.
