What's the budget? If for fun (weekend car) then absulutely has to be the Land Rover 90 V8. If for day to day running, I would recommend the following (second hand), for real offroading - Mercedes G wagen (pre 90), just for the looks then the ML. However I would personally go for a 95 - 02 Range Rover 2,5 DHSE, it looks the part still and is a fantastic road manners. If purchasing new wise then the Tourage seems to be a good buy, or a bottom of the Range range Rover Sport. But please do not get a Japanese 4x4, except if it is a Trooper, Fourtrak, Nissan Patrol or Land Crusier Amazon

We've had 3 Jeep Cherokees over the years and love them. The first 2 were 4l petrol which we converted to LPG (cheap gas) and our latest is 3.1 diesel Grand Cherokee. Great engines, great toys, great comfort (we quite often drive 12 hours in a stretch and arrive fresh as a daisy). Off road its amazing - don't listen to the landrover fraternity - they're talking rot! We had a freelander once and NEVER AGAIN! Anyway, its all about your individual taste, but I'd definitely recommend the jeep. Enjoy your 4x4 whichever you choose.

I used to have a Mitsubish Shogun Pinin. It can do proper off road stuff, if you need it, as it has a low range gearbox, and 3 modes of drive to the wheels, plus a centre diff lock.

It was utterly reliable, and pretty quick on tarmac. The reason I changed it, was fuel economy (30mpg), my annual mileage was quite high at the time, plus insurance and servicing were steep (as with any 4x4).

I would avoid Land Rovers of any sort, they just fall to bits (despite the fancy adverts).

Depends on your budget and what you want it for. If it's for the school run anything will do but steer clear of Sangyongs, Daewoo, Hyundai. If you actually intend to go off road only a Land Rover or Range Rover will do.

Unless you live somewhere that has a lot of snow, you don't need a 4x4 for typical road conditions in my opinion. They are more expensive to maintain. Most of the time you'll be driving with 2 wheel drive.

Toyota 4runner, decent gas mileage, excellent quality and reliability, very rugged full frame construction. Lots of used ones around, most of them were never off road.
