You can write a poem about absolutely ANYTHING!!!

Knowing how to write one is a different story...However its all about self-expression. The best poems come from the heart, not necessarily 'love-related poems' but just what's in your heart. Could be anything from pets, to hobbies, to the scenery, people, places etc etc. Anyone can write a poem, but what are you writing a poem for? Answer this question and you'll know what to write about and how to go about it.

For example, if for humour, then obviously you'll write something silly, with your own wit showing...if to impress someone you're courting then its romantic...etc. You get the drift.

Then just collect all the words you want to use.
You can make it rhyme or not, remember poems don't need to rhyme, but they do need some form of rhythm or form to work.

You could be describing yourself while your descriptions seem like you're describing a car or a tree or something...get it?

Poems are beautiful that way...because they describe things to give you a picture of what the writer is talking about... and the way they feel when they're writing it (shown by how they describe their chosen subject) eg. colour red could mean love, anger, blood...so how you use it will determine what feeling you're trying to portray.

Hope it helps, goodluck!

Just a sample of contrast:
1. Roses are red, violets are blue, no one can love you, much more than I do (obviously an affectionate poem)
2. Roses are red, violets are blue, I better not see you, coz I don't know what I'll do! (obviously a 'break-up' poem)

Example of descriptive:
Your beauty is so soft, so delicate
like the petals of a rose - untouched
Your smile - so warm, so genuine
like the sun, it lights up my life

....you get the idea...just be as descriptive/expressive and you'll be alright!
