oh there's plenty to be curious about when it comes to the nazis and the german population in general.

the general consensus that i have read in history books is that german workers and middle class citizens gave up their political liberties and freedoms in exchange for security.

the german govt always made sure that there was a frightening enemy at the door that needed to be dealt with in the harshest measures, such that losing a little freedom in exchange for getting rid of the latest menace always seemed acceptable to germans.

if you think i'm talking only about hitler, you're wrong.

kaiser wilhelm thought that the great enemy was communists who seemed to always win a certain number of seats in their parliament (bund, or bundesrat or something like that). wilhelm also feared the catholics. the commies were reds, and the catholics were regarded as the black menace. wilhelm ended up making an alliance with the catholics in order to be rid of the communists - which he was never able to do even when he outlawed the party.

so the idea that hitler introduced all of these same sort of measures to germans in the 1930's and 1940's is not entirely accurate.

in fact, some german industrialists were ahead of the govt on this sort of thing. alfred krupp offered his workers excellent working conditions, decent housing, medical plans and even pensions - all things considered radically liberal at the time. krupp only asked for one thing in return, a loss of political liberty. by and large the workers went for it.

this was in the 19th century, when germany was still a joke and a rising power under wilhelm the first and a chancellor named bismarck.

it should also be remembered that in the 1940's the german people came to see hitler as a hideous mistake and found themselves in the middle of nightmarish death camps - with their hands slapped away from their noses by american soldiers when they tried to plug their noses from the stench of death - only after a solution in the field had been hopelessly lost.

these are stark reminders of how americans should behave when asked by our govt to willingly surrender some of our liberties (allowing the govt to tap phones without a warrant for example) in exchange for security over the terrorists.

what is never mentioned is why we were able to look certain death (nuclear armed soviet union) for over 20 years without needing this same surrender of liberty.

it was ben franklin who said that a man who is willing to surrender some of his liberty for security deserves neither...

Easily WWI was not started by the Germans but rather the British and French Blockaded the Baltic sea, SO Germany went to war.

Between WWI and WWII there were several bad things that happened to the German people. 1st and fore most The French and British decided to throw the entire War debt on Germany. SO the Germans got the printing machines to work over time. Now that that problem was solved there was another that is the fact that the economy was trashed. Hitler being a 2ND Lt. in WWI was popular but considered ruthless plus he was well spoken. They backed him in a series of some legal and some illegal events. Hitler offered men jobs and even promised them housing and food for their wife's and kids building roads. These would later be the SS.

Anyway 30 or so years roll around and the Germans had really become bitter and it did not help that the Jews were lending them money at high rates of interest. Finally all the fin. oppression formed into a rage that would have made it easy to kill anyone who opposed you for they are opposing your quote god given rights and were also paying people back for 30 or so years of oppression.

\Pretty simple when you think about it.

Lets see:

A leader that promises jobs (and actually does it!) during a depression.
Overthrow of the Versailles Treaty
Built up the highway system to what it is today
Of course the VW..

Once he got the hearts of the people, he could have them do anything. The SS were his personal murderers, and if you were a Jew, you were toast literally...

Easy, people who are uninformed are doomed to repeat history. Most thought it was for the good of the Homeland(as they said, much like here now). They passed a law much like the Patriot Act which stripped citizens of their rights and from there, declared martial law. How come it took us damn near 12yrs of Hitler doing this to his own as well as others? That's my question. How come we were lied to getting into WW2, Vietnam, the Iraq war? People will believe whatever the authorities tell them without any questions of their actions. Those who sleep, die in their sleep.-Me

Lots of people ignored the minor things they didn't like and enjoyed the prosperity the Nazis brought . (the german people were often starving in the depression) By the time people realized what a nut case Hitler was ,he was in power as a dictator. Then it was too late.

A combination of dehumanizing them to the point where the general population no longer associated them as being people (much like slavery), extreme authoritarianism, and extreme denial.

We all like to believe that we would be the one that would stand up, but until that gun is in your face - or your child's face - it's theory.
