I made a stupid mistake cutting a pie in college and had to have stitches in one of my fingers. That was several years ago and I *still* get teased about it.
Sadly I don't think you'll live it down for quite some time. The best way to get it to stop is to act like it doesn't bother you. Don't give any reaction whatsoever - even though it is hard not to. Eventually people will stop.

Unfortunately, it will probably never stop, especially coming from your family. A lot of people, especially people who've known you forever, latch on to one incident that they think is funny (what's funny about breaking your ankle is beyond me) and constantly joke about it in a way that will get really tiring for you, but for some reason they'll never "get the hint." Someone I know got lost once after moving out of state, a perfectly understandable situation, but now they have a reputation for getting lost and their family brings it up constantly like they think it's the funniest thing. I guess it happened almost 15 years ago.
The best bet is to be very serious and tell them that the joke is old and you're not laughing. It's important to be serious about this or they'll think you're just defending yourself from their hilarious onslaught. Unfortunately, it probably won't work no matter what you say to them.

Here's one tell them that I broke both my heals jumping off the bleachers at the race track, to go to the restroom. I did walk to the restroom, but after that I had to be carried around. I had to wear cast for 3 months and crawl around. Maybe they'll make jokes about me instead.

Welcome to the hell of family. I'm sorry to say, it won't stop.
I still get picked on for calling the Christmas manger the Jesus farm, cutting my bangs too short in 7th grade (I'm 37 years old!!), putting my car in a ditch at 17, braking my arm because I wouldn't let a boy kiss me in 3rd grade, and finally, breaking my foot trying to do a round house to my x hubbys head (we were goofing around, not fighting).
Get over it and move on cuz it's never gonna stop.

Probably never. Some people will milk it as long as they possible can. I sometimes get teased for things I did 10 years ago now. Just ignore it, or find a good comeback.

it is unlikely to ever stop, but you could refuse to get the mail if they are going to make fun of you. (my mother broke her elbow when she was going to get the mail in the winter, she slipped on the ice by the mailbox and didn't want to ruin her nails, so she broke her fall with her elbow. your story can't be too much worse than that :))

About a good ole while because when it finally heals they will say, " Now this time when you go get the mail be careful." Or something like that.

i don't think it will ever stop because it's just something funny that u r going 2 have to ignore or u could laugh about. 1 way that it might stop is... 2 laugh with them and make fun of yourself when u make mistakes.

I think it will stop when you do something even more memorable for everyone. Like maybe you could break your nose while taking a shower or something....
