How do you feel about displaying - to friends, at the gym, etc - works in progress? I don't mean tats you want to add on to, but rather ones where one or more further visits are required to complete the work. Ones where some sections are colored, shaded, filled in, whatever, while others are waiting their turn. Mine & others back pieces (or anything of moderate size or larger) are good examples of this.

From one perspective I think many of us want to show off the work, but there are cons to it. What will be fine in the end piece may look so-so, or even off, before it's done. There's a certain amount of fairness due to the artist (and oneself) - kind of like judging a cook before the soup is done.

Smart people probably will not have a problem, but there's enough bias against body modification in the first place. People can be less than observant & fair.

Thoughts?

As a side comment, I'm not too worried about reactions or seeking a course of action. I'm fairly confident with the work, although rather impatient on getting more work done. :) Mostly, I'm curious on other people thoughts & experiences.

well, im like a 12 year old, if i have something new, i want to show it off. i have not had this with any of my current tats since they have all been finished in one sitting. when i go start on sleeve, i know i will want to show people how awesome it is going to be.

i try to not worry about people's opinions of what i do to myself. i know that the progress cannot be judged, because its not done yet, but in a perfect world everyone would think that way.

i do completely understand having reservations about showing it. you know it WILL look great, but its not looking like that at the time.

but yeah, id probably show anyway.

I don't have a large enough tattoo to need multiple sessions to complete....I consider the tattoo on the 23rd to be an addition rather than a continuation? I think that it's fine to show off your work simply because it's just what you said....work in progress...not complete yet. I don't think that it necessarily takes away from the artist's credability because of the simple fact that it's not complete. For example, I've taken a look at the pictures that you have from all your sittings and I think that each one is pretty top notch stuff! Seeing the tattoo incomplete didn't take away from the tattoo at all in my opinion. If anything, I was curious to see the completed tattoo - and see the differences from sitting to sitting. I thought the initial drawing and shading were awesome and I didn't think any less of the artist's capabilities. I also think that it's up to the individual themselves and whether they have the capability to study aspects of the tattoo and forsee the future and the potential that the tattoo has. Re: a bias against body modifications....I don't think that seeing a complete or incomplete tattoo is going to change their views much because I think that often times, these thoughts and viewpoints arise from something deeper than simply appearance...whether it's family or personal beliefs.

when i started on my back piece a year ago i posted pictures the day i got it. why? because i was so freaking excited! and i continued to post progress pictures all along the way. but since i started the rest of my back i have not been posting public pictures. many of my friends and family have seen the work in progress unfinished because 1. they ask to see it 2. they know that it isn't finished and judge only on the parts that ARE completed. so i have mixed feelings about sharing unfinished works. i would never post my unfinished tattoo on ratemyink.com and expect it to get a good rating because you can't judge a partially done tattoo with any accuracy. but plenty of people do.
HOWEVER once i get my back worked on in three weeks i will display the finished part in a picture. why? because finally half of my back will be finished!! (but the unfinished part won't be showing.)

Hey Dude.....whats up? I think we discussed this one night....I think that having unfinished ink would make me feel edgy...... It would be like having half my house painted or my yard dug up waiting for the landscapers to finish...I wouldn't be inviting folks over to entertain until the job was done. I do know I would have mixed feelings about it.....I would want to show it off but I would be selective about who to show it to. I know that SOME people (mostly the ones on this forum) would see past the outlines and partially colored areas .....most tattoo aficionados would understand and look at the bigger picture...but in answer to your question....people who dislike tattoos or who are on the fence about them.....I would pass on showing these folks my work in progress....

In all reality, I really don't mind who sees my works in progress, as long as I tell them that that is what they are. As far as my friends are concerned, they would probably already know that, but people that I don't know, you are right, I get a little weary, and sometimes I feel it is as if I am negatively promoting my artist. But I feel it is as if that is their own loss, because they did not even take the time to ask me about it, they just automatically made assumptions.
