Get a longer lasting battery. A stronger one too.

First we have to know what happens after a few seconds. Does a battery go dead? Or does the coil burn out? If the battery goes dead, I would suggest using a power supply or winding a coil with a much higher (X100) resistance so that the battery lasts longer. If the coil burns out then you need to reduce the current.

Try this put a small resistor in series with the coil and see if you still have a magnetic, this wil limit the current drain on your batteries. Or skip the batteries and use a small transformer you can get one at radio shack, or use a spare one from an old cell phone. Be careful.

How are you using your electromagnet? are you trying to create electricity with the magnet? if so, electricity will only be created with change in magnetic flux. Which means that if you dont move it, at end it will stop working since there was no change.
