If you like a good steak in the old fashioned style, try Uncle Jacks right around 9th and 34th. I am assuming you are talking about the island of Manhattan?

Well, you are a tourist, so I guess Mars 2112 would be ok. Go across the street to Ellen's Stardust, It's so much better, and locals eat there. As far as bakeries, well, the best is Vienero's (sp), which is in east village area. I'm not a dessert eater, but those always get me. For a funky time, there is Serendipity over near Bloomingdales, not sure of the street, maybe 60th, east of Bloomies. Great for all kinds of ice cream specialties. Been there for years and years. There's a very famous place in litte Italy, but the name excapes me, try Zagats for help.
As far as restaurants, that's all too hard to do not knowing what you really want, so again, hit that Zagat's guide.

Mars 2112 is very popular with tourists- not a bad thing.
also look for
Po (Mario Bottali's place), Il Bastardo (for the tuscan steak), One If By Land (gotta have the reservation)
For bakerys enter the great cupcake debate: Is the best Magnolia? (expect a line) Billy's? or the less trendy and in my opinion #1: Cupcake Cafe!

Hard Rock?? Are you serious?
There are so many amazing restaurants in NYC it's hard to pick any one. But I'll list two that I went to recently.
Italian - Scarlattos near Times Square. Went there after watching a show and it was amazing. My husband is half Italian and loved it. Great 3 course dinner with a nice bottle of wine and desert cost just over 100$ for the both of us.
Classy - Grammercy Tavern, one of the best in NYC if you can get reservations.
Good luck!

You have to understand that NYC is huge. There are thousands of restaurants and bakeries. One place I would suggest is Chinatown. Good, cheap restaurants.
