We are having a wedding at a bed and breakfast, and we got a quote on the champagne served by them, and it is $24 for a bottle of Korbel. Yet I can buy it at a store for $11. Is this ridiculous or normal? It seems like they're bumping up the price a lot to me. Would it be rude to ask them if we could bring our own champagne? It is a small wedding so we won't need too much.

Thanks!

$24 a bottle is completely normal. Same as every other caterer. And as far as asking if you buy your own, definitely ask. It's not rude, but be aware many places will not allow you to do this.

Even if your caterer does allow you to buy your own, you will still have a couple fees added on since you bought your own. You will have dishwasher fee, corkage fees, and more than likely pouring fees as well. So even though you can buy it for $11 a bottle it will at least be $7 a bottle in fees.

It's especially bad for a toast since all the bottles have to be opened, poured and served at the same time. It's not like you could have someone pour it in advance.

Alcohol is the biggest expense in a wedding. Consider a champagne punch instead. Often that can be made in advance and therefore would not use as much champagne, does not have a corking fee, etc. Or consider offering white wine. That's usually a good deal cheaper.

Alcohol is the biggest profit. Bars make around 700% (per drink) what it cost to make the drink.

It is never rude to ask for a better price.
In their defence; they go to the store and buy it for you and they store it in their fridge and they open and serve it for you in glasses that they provide and then wash the glasses and so on and so forth.. I know how much it hurts when you look at the store price but the B&B is not a charity they must make a profit. STILL IT NEVER HURTS TO ASK FOR A BREAK ON THE PRICE.

Ask them if you can bring in your own champagne. I think they will say yes.
