I have had sleep problems for years. When my only child died from cancer, my Dr put me on xanax. After 5 yrs of 6mg of xanax a day, I decided to go to detox. Now, 6 months after detox, I am unable to sleep. It takes me 2 or 3 hrs to fall asleep and i wake up every 2 hrs. I am so tired and weary. Dr. put me on ambien and then lunesta. The side affects were horrible. Everything from headache to lousy taste. Now Dr. has put me on 1/2 mg xanax a night. It works but I am afraid of needing more as time goes on. Anyone that has an answer, please help me

I have two sleep disorders and have for about six or seven years. For regulating my sleep pattern Remeron is the way to go. I agree with you about the Ambien and Lunesta. Ambien in fact gave me hallunications. I have taken Remeron for nearly three years with negative side effects. It is a wonderful medication. First it is not habit forming. Second depending upon the strength the cost is anywhere from $30 to $45 a month. Finally, IT WORKS. App 45 minutes after you take the medication, you will feel very very sleepy and fall asleep within 7-10 minutes of laying down instead of laying for 2-4 hours in a "twilight sleep" that leaves you exhausted only to wake up and take 1-2 hours to fall back asleep. Upon waking (generally about 8 hours later) you may feel a little groggy but it is not too bad. A cup of coffee helps. DO NOT take this medication if you have to drive.

One other small perk with Remeron is that it is a very very mild-antidepressant and since I lost both of my children at the same time (I can relate sweetheart. *HUGS*) I can say taking Remeron overall is a winner. Please ask for this the next time you visit your Dr.

Also, you may want to join a support group whether it be a depression group, a sleep disorder group, or a child loss support group. You are not alone.

Have you tried any herbal remedies? Most of them really don't work that well, but it's a better alternative than using all these medications. If you can, try just totally wearing your self completely out, like exercise like crazy, right before bed. I know that sounds dumb, but if I do that, I sleep all night. My problems are probably not as severe as yours, but I had that same issue. I didn't try medications at all though, b/c I had heard the side effects were bad. That's a hard problem to cure I think. Doctors only want to prescribe something, instead of curing the real problem. No offence to any doctors, I'm sure they try. Anyway, not very much help, but that's all I have.

you need to put your faith in your doctors doing the right thing for you. The dose he is giving you ia a very small dose. And better than the other meds you were taking, i must add. Just take it when your going to bed and relax every muscle and you will sleep. If you might wake up alittle too early, just have a drink of water and go back to bed. And say nto yourself from your head to your toes, that every muscle is relaxed and you will sleep.Good luck, i had the same experience with antianxiety medicine. bettyk.

Something like Zoloft should work better than any of those. It will take two weeks to get in your system and start working.

YOUR DOCTOR SHOULD PRESCRIBE "REMERON" THAT DOES IN FACT HELP PEOPLE SLEEP PLUS IT IS NOT HABIT FORMING ..BUT YOUR DOCTOR IS SERIOUSLY, TRYING TO MAKE A DRUG ADDICT OUT OF YOU .
HE IS PRESCRIBING ALL OF THEM HABIT FORMING MEDICATIONS , GOOD LUCK !
