I think that some things, like "thou shalt not kill," or "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God' should be taken literally. I also think that there is a lot of allegory and symbolism in the Bible. Jesus spoke in parables over and over again. Revelation is obviously largely symbolic. It's not one or the other, it's both. Only the Holy Spirit can enlighten you to the true meaning of the scriptures. Hint: It's all about Jesus.
Something else to understand is that a lot of scriptures had literal significance for a specific time, but were also made to apply to later generations as types and shadows. Like the literal sacrifices in the Old Testament were types of Christ, who would be our ultimate,. final sacrifice. And now we are to offer our bodies as living sacrifices. It's great stuff. It takes more than a lifetime to comprehend it all.

The Bible is an ancient text written by ancient men. The Old Test is obviously tribal in belief while the New Test is more Hellenistic in nature. Interpreting such a writ takes a great deal of study into the culture from which these writers come from. What we would take to mean one thing, they could have meant something else.
Personally, I don't see the book as the "Word of God" but mans perspective on the world around him and applying that to their image of God.

I believe it can be taken out of context by whoever reads the bible, and so often the case through history, it has been butchered enough to mean what we know today.

It is best interpreted as the Christian Holy Book, with little to no proof that what it claims is possible or real.

allegorical or symbolic and literal, not at the same time.
You have to use your brain to determine when in each instance. Sometimes one way and sometimes the other.
Drink His blood--literal, no.
Eye hurt thee pluck it out---no.
Foot hurt thee, cut it off----no.
Judge the fruit produced by someone---yes. You are what you do.
Be perfect---no, who can?
Not me. How about you?
