You can continue taking analgesics (like tylenol, aspirin, motrin), and for some people they're okay. However, they sometimes cause "rebound headaches": Everytime they wear off you get another headache, You're in a merry-go-round. For some people, a better solution is to see a doctor and get a prescription for Zomig or Imitrex, which stop migraines & have little rebound. Your doctor can also prescribe preventatives such as inderal.

Hi. I just happened to see your question. I suffer from migraines too. Tylenol doesn't even touch mine. The strongest Tylenol out there is Tylenol 3 (you have to have an RX). I've tried a lot of different things, but my doctor prescribed Imitrex. It has been the best drug in the world for me with no side effects. I can still go on with my life. Good luck to you.

If you are having constant migraines, seek the expert advice of a neurologist who specializes in headaches.
Tylenol is a fairly safe drug, but it is easy to overdose on it. Less than 10 grams (10 extra strength) tylenol can be dangerous to deadly. The threshold is even lower if you mix it with alcohol or you have liver damage (cirrhosis, hepatitis, Wilson's dz, alpha1-antitryptsan dz, hemachromatosis ,etc).
There are numerous medications that can be used to treat migraines. They range from the triptans (Amerge, Axert, Frova, imitrex, Maxalt, Relpax, and Zomig) and ergotamines (Carergot, Migranal, and DHE 45) which are vasocontrtrictors to other preventatives (beta-blockers, butorphanol, topamax and depakote).
More importantly, a neurologist may be able to determine *why* you get migraines and may be able to help you avoid the triggers. you may find that these may not be migraines at all some people get sinus infections or have other conditions that are mistaken for mirgraines. Failing that, these medications may be able to help.

Additional information:
Please know that Tylenol's #2, #3 and #4 are combinations of tylenol and codeine which makes them schedule 2 drugs and are not available with out a valid prescription (DEA lic required). And there are stronger combinations of tylenol and narcotics (percocet and Roxicet off the top of my head)

Try Excedrin Migraine. I also use Alka Seltzer which helps the nausea.
Try acupuncture; monitor what you eat to see what triggers the migraine e.g., cheese, red wine, chocolate, oranges, grapefruit, tequila, in addition pay attention to weather changes and patterns. When it's humid and heavy, I stay in doors otherwise I'm down for the count. Certain smells trigger mine, especially lilies.
There are prescription drugs you can take, so talk to your doctor.
Migraines are heinous and anyone who says that "it's just a headache" has no idea what they're talking about.

Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck.
Headaches can be caused by minor problems
like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more serious reasons
like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can
have harmful side effects, so it is better to
modify your lifestyle. More information available at

Tickdhero gave a great answer, I just needed to clarify that there IS Tylenol 4 available by prescription... I didn't think it existed until my mother was prescribed them for pain management!

It would be best to try and find out what is causing them. Cut the caffeine, sodas and cigarettes for starters. Keep a running diary of what you eat and when. Then look at your diary when a migrane is starting to see if anything you are eating is triggering it. Even onions or chocolate can trigger them!
