Check with your college, they usually have a network for matching up tutors with students. Or go to Japantown (you're lucky that Los Angeles has one of the few remaining Japantowns in the U.S.) and put up a flier and ask around.

I need help with my Japanese as well! Here is an idea: look for community care (elderly care, both live in and day-care) centers that specialize in assisting Japanese people. You'd be amazed -- there are so many elderly Japanese folks (Nisei, too) sitting around with no one to talk to! I contacted one in my area to volunteer wtih them a few days/week to improve my Japanese. They were ecstatic to hear from me! Alas, my time committments (work) prevented me from starting the program but I joined the local Japanese Cultural Center group to work with them when they have language classes and when they need volunteers. I am sure that you can find something similar to Kimochi Home in the LA area.
