I happen to know that Arnold Bennet said that quote. In my opinion, that quote means that although it is not within your power to dictate the actions of others (or the universe, for that matter), you are certainly able to control your own actions, and consequently, well, the consequences of those actions.

To me, it means that you can only control, to some extent, your own life, not others. You are not omnipotent. That is left to whatever "higher being" you happen to believe in.
My mother told me that in this life, you have only yourself, in the long run, to rely on. Spouses leave or die. Children grow up and make lives of their own. Friends move away. School ends and everyone gets a life of their own, even after you swear you'll be friends forever. You can love others, share with others, be a friend to others, but in the end, in that final moment of your life, you ultimately have only yourself to meet with whatever is really "the end". At that moment, you are in charge of yourself and what you have made of yourself through your actions & deeds during your life.
Oh...you better make that last minute your very best moment! Eternity depends on it.

Well, I think it means that you can't always make everything go how you want to, you're not always in charge; but you can control what you do, so don't criticize what other people are, doing learn from their mistakes and try to be a good person. Maybe? =]

The universe exists outside of our control. We can react to it or act upon it in small ways, but the only thing that we can really control is our own behavior and, if you want to make God laugh, tell him you had a plan..

its like potato salad. youre always going to be the potato, whether you like it or not. you cant help the fact that someone put mayonaise and mustard on your head, layed you in a pile of eggs and celery. you have a choice to just be a potato, leaving them to be the mayo, mustard, egg and celery...all separate. or you can choose to mix with them and bounce off of eachother and be something fabulous and yummy and learn from the mix. choosing to be part of the mix and contribute makes a fabulous new result for everyone, thus in essence, controlling part of the universe. (through your control of yourself)

It's pretty self-explanitory isn't it?
I mean, I can't do one thing to hold up a single star in the galaxy. However, I can uphold my own values and not sell them out whenever something comes to challenge them.

You control your fate and choices. What you do affects others, but as a collective effort, all actions control the universe.

You can't control what everyone else is doing or what is happening with wars, fights, and prices of things. But you can control what you do like when you eat or how you act.
