Depends on the kid and what you teach them. I didn't learn to SING my ABCs until I was in Kindergarten. Before that, I always SAID them. My sister learned the song when I did (she was 3), and my brothers both got it down around 2 1/2 - 3 1/2. They teach the alphabet in Kindergarten, however, so I don't know how important it is.....but we're working on SAYING the alphabet (since our daughter doesn't really like the song) with our 2 year old at the moment.

I went into preschool a year early. By then I could sing my ABC's and I could count to around a hundred if not higher. The next year they wouldn't let me into Kindergarten because I was a year too young and the classes were too full. So didn't go to school that year. I played a lot and my mom and grandmas would read to me a lot. I watched a lot of PBS, reading rainbow, sesame street, that sort of thing.
Then the next year when I did start kindergarten, I was able to read from the newspaper, not just my picture books. As my dad's friend said "Heck, I can't even do that."

So it just goes to show you how much your children learn at that age has a lot to do with you. If you don't talk baby talk to your child he'll learn to speak sooner. If you read to your child, sit him in your lap and let him watch your finger follow the words as you read. Make playtime educational. It makes for great quality time with your child. Children are sponges at that age. What they soak up during that time is your responsibility as a parent.

Children are all different and learn at different ages.

My oldest was around 1 when she started singing them...my middle daughter was closer to 2....and my youngest daughter didn't start until after Christmas when she was 29 months.

What helped my daughter was the Leap Frog alphabet magnets(not sure exactly what it is called) But it has a magnetic base that you can stick each letter into and it will tell you what sound it makes and will sing the ABC's. She learned 80% of them within two weeks of getting it. It's pretty cheap...I paid $15 for it at Walmart.

My son sang them before he was 1. My daughter is 13 months and hasnt even really started talking yet. It just depends on the child no matter what you do.

If you start singing it as a lullaby, they will begin humming it along with you. They love to mimmick and should start doing it with some of their first words.
