Even if it's not a requirement of the Canadian Customs, Americans leaving the USA to go into Canada will require their passports in order to get back into the US, anyways. So, if they intend to return to the USA, they need to have their passports, regardless.

Yes, if Canada requires any other country to have a passport, why not ask to US citizens to get a passport?

I would say yes. They have every right to protect them selves, I was there a few years ago and they wanted ID which I think is quit ok, I had my military ID and that at the time was ok, but now I think they want more, I loved Canada, and the people were all quit nice
and with any Border.. its their country they can make the call
with what makes them comfortable

you do now, or we cannot get back into the usa. where the heck have you been? your govt prefers them always has. btw, a legal perm resident of canada cannot own a passport. a us perm res can. a legal immigrant to canada has to fork over thier us passport for a time to your govt despite that being illegal to fork over a us passport to a non us govt. funny huh?
