I am looking for information regarding the Ghost Dance of Native Americans. Any books, journals, and especially videos portraying it would be most appreciated. I would really like to focus on the misunderstandings between the Native American and United States cultures. Also, I would like to know more about the lack of religious freedom that was experienced by Native Americans during the time.

Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it!

The ghost dance was misinterpreted by the army as a war dance, which led to a pretty significant massacre. It was never meant to be a war dance. Most of the "misunderstandings" as you call them, were very clear. The native Americans inhabited land that we wanted. When simply going into their villages and massacring them got bad publicity from the East, they initiated the wonderful blanket giveaway, which seemed at the time to be kind, but since the blankets were coated with smallpox, it was just another attempt to massacre them. The US was most certainly not the good guy in this situation.

The Native American Freedom of Religion Act was passed in 1993. Before this time Native American Religious freedom was a joke. Natives were banned from participating in many ceremonies. During the time of the ghost dance Native people were particularly oppressed. If caught perfroming the dance Natives would often be executed.
