Depends on which state you're in. Certain states consider any traffic violation to be a misdemeanor, which in essence is a criminal charge. Here in Florida most traffic related offenses are criminal infractions and therefore you only have to pay a fine and do not have to go to court. There are a few instances in which a traffic infraction results in a mandatory court date, such as if you're going 30+ over the posted limit, you pass a school bus on the side that the children are exiting, or if you're at fault in a crash involving serious bodily injury to another.

These are just examples from Florida and each state has their own rules and laws. Most likely you'll just go in front on a judge or hearing officer and will enter a plea: guilty, not guilty or nolo contendere (no contest). The officer may or may not be there, depending on the type of hearing. If you plead guilty or nolo contendere the judge will most likely issue a fine at that time. If you plead not guilty then there will be a hearing.

Since it is in a school zone, that makes the ticket carry more weight. The court date is due to the zone. It (in many states) is more serious to break any law inside a school zone and the penalties are proportionately more severe. If possible, pay the fine. If not, appear in court and pay the fine.

if you pay the fine - you get points on your license
and your insurance goes up -

you may be able to attend driving school - and get no points
and NO insurance increase

call your clerk of the traffic court - should have the number on your ticket

ask for instructions - may end up paying about the same -
but your insurance will not go up

You've been cited for speeding. Go to the court date and plead guilty/not guilty, and hope for the best. Your appearance in court is mandatory unless you have a bail amount you can pay in lieu of appearing.
