Melissa, I understand your anxiety and your problem. India is a land still steeped in caste systems and religious sentiments. But it does not mean that Indians cannot assimilate. Remember one thing- whenever you meet the parents of your would be suitor, touch their feet and then fold your hands and say NAMASTEY. if they are Hindus. If they are muslim, just say Aadab. I am sure they will be floored. Secondly, do NOT disobey their dictums. They will definitely not tell you to do anything which goes against your beliefs. You see Melissa, all religions and faiths flourish in India and hence they are not strangers to anything...but yes...respect and obedience to elders of the family is of PARAMOUNT importance....God bless you....may you have a happy life!!

You have three good answers.
You should put this Q? to him, if you have any doubt then best thing is to get married and then inform the parent, this way they have no say in preventing you from getting married they can except the situation or put a distance.
You on the other end should be willing to be thick skin and accept whatever is dished out to you, nothing is easy but if you are not in the joint family it will not be that difficult to handle. Hopefully they will except you from the start and the whole issue of acceptance is avoided.

They would surely accept you, if you assure them of a loving & lasting relationship. And if they dont, he might marry you but there would be no mental peace as he would be torn apart between his family & you.
To start off make acquaintances with his parents & family; later if they dont approve of wedding (initially), they might at least 'consider' you cos they would know you personally. (Well this worked out for me :) No harm in trying it out)

Depending on how open minded they are. But usually they will not accept you. If he is amercanized then he will marry you regardless but if he is not he will go with what his parents say
