Hi Claire,
Ask yourself.
What is it that makes you feel this way?
Having only visited the Dentist twice, how is it logical that you feel the way you do?
My guess is that someone has told you how nasty a visit to the Dentist can be.
Try seeing for your self what it's like and dont be frightened off by small minded people who have nothing better to do than to try and control you.
The point is, if you have Gingivitis, it is catching and your partner is likely to get it too, now do you really want that? I guess not.
It is fairly easily treated and OK, it might be a bit uncomfortable but nothing to be scared of.
If you are one of the fortunate people with access to a Dentist, why not visit the Surgery and explain how you feel. I'm sure someone there will be able to talk to you and help you see there really is nothing to be upset about.
It does worry me that some advice here is to get drugs to relieve your anxieies. There are plenty of things you can do to cope before resorting to that.

You probably had a bad experience with a dentist and are not into pain. Join the crowd!
I would try going to another dentist, possibly a female one that you would feel more comfortable with. Some dentists tend to be a lot less painful than other dentists. Some dentists use methods whereby there is very little pain because they deaden an area by just touching it with the needle and then giving the rest of the injection.
I still panic a little when I know I have to go to the dentist, but I relax when I get there.

My mom had problems too. It sounds like anxiety. Talk to your dentist about it because he should be able to give you a prescription for some medicine to take before you go in for an appt. If he won't do this for you then go to a different dentist. It is part of their job to try to help keep you comfortable in the dentist chair.

Have the dentist you see prescribe you something to take the edge off like Xanax or Valium and take it before you go see him. Also, if its that terrifying, why not go under Gerneral Anesthesia so you have no clue whats going on until its over with.

you just need to take deep breaths before going in and try not to associate the dentist with pain or suffereing. Usually for routine proceedures your are given a local anaesthetic so tis highly unlikely you will feel anything. just close your eyes in the chair and think of anything but where you are, before you know it, it is all over.

I have a huge fear of the dentist!
My dentist was great - he'd keep you busy thinking of other things and have good music in the background so it'fd keep your mind off it.
Be brave! Good luck!

Try taking Kalms a week before your appointment as these help with when you panic they are a herbal remedy and most supermarkets sell them. If this fails talk to your GP or try hypnosis.
