The same can be said for many processed foods and drink that they add sugar to. Did they ever stop to think that perhaps some people like the taste of tea, coffee, cranberry and chococlate and that we don't want the flavor totally covered up by sugar?

Yes, it's nasty, but they do it to mask the taste (or lack thereof) of inferior ingredients. Try better chocolates from chain boutiques like Godiva or smaller chocolatiers. Also, try better brands in stores like Asher's, Ghiradelli, etc. Much, much better. You can actually taste the ingredients.

Because sugar is cheap relative to the price of chocolate. If a manufacturer skimps on the expensive ingredient, they compensate with something else. In this case, you get what you pay for. Cheap chocolates are full of fillers like sugar and even parafin.

Go somewhere like Earthfare or Greenlife (Healthy grocery stores) and get some 80% coco bars. They are a little bitter at first but allow the true flavor to shine through, great with red wine!!
