As quickly as you can do the exercises in "Classroom in a Book" for the respective programs. This is what I used for photoshop. It is great!!!

I had a class on Illustrator. There are still things I don't know about both programs, but Classroom in a Book will get you started. The actual names are "Photoshop CS Classroom in a Book", "Photoshop 7.0 Classroom in a book" etc.

They're always coming up with updates and new plugins - I started learning those over 10 years ago and I am still learning new things.

Just pull up a few tutorials on the internet and go for it :)

still learning it......photoshop is so complex that the learning is never ending......It is not just understanding the 'tools' and their function and their operation it is finding new ways to combine 'tools' to do things that make the program produce the results you want and not only what you want finding out how to do something unique.

You should be able to go from not knowing anything to being somewhat aware in a few days. It would take forever to master, so you learn as you go and figure out what it can do.
