I also live in the scottish borders. I think you should just install windows xp onto your computer but the windows xp software cd normally costs £100 but if you ask your friends or people you work with for a loan of their windows xp cd. Also i hope you manage too upgrade.

if i had my way i would still be running win 95 to be honest.
XP will basically give you the security centre (wow) and a much easier set up for a network.
could never get usb to work on 95 so went onto 98 then moved to XP simply for the easier networking (i gave up on 98 as i could never get the 3 pc's to see each other)
add to this the fact that XP is bigger and requires a better cpu and memory than you probably have now....and i would say stick with what you have, if it works and does what you need then why introduce potential problems?
(XP will simply not recognise some older drivers and 'signed' updates will be needed)

You can upgrade diredtly to xp from windows 98, 2000, me, nt workstation 4 sp5. If you have an earlier operating system you will need an interim upgrade, or if your hardware etc is within the minimum standard do a clean install. minimum pentium 233 ghz processor, 64 mb of ram, 2gb disk space.

I wouldn't upgrade to XP.

Depending on what processor, and how much ram you have, I would probably stick with win2000 or if it is older, then Win98.

Both programs still work perfectly fine, have almost no compatibility issues, and the only reason most people have moved on to XP or now Vista, is because they are trying to impress their geek friends, or they think Uncle Bill Gates doesn't have enough spending cash.

O this is easy... I built my own PC and everything is complete for sure... just go to bestbuy etc get win XP and then restart your pc and hold DEL or w/e your bios command is... then go and set your load up as CD-ROM and then windows will install itsself.. its REALLY easy, the only reason Geeksquad overcharges... and dell gives you W/XP with a bunch of unessary tools... make sure you have all your driver discs.. such as graphics card soundcard and mobo drivers

Hope this helps~

You could try UBUNTU or XUBUNTU. You can run them from a LIVE CD. They are free, reliable and up to date operating systems. If you like them you can do a dual boot with windows 98. Get a friend who has some knowledge of computers to help you.
