Is it 4-wheel drive? If it is expect $1800-$2500 depending on what area you live. Labor costs can vary location to location. I would NEVER take a car with 96,000 miles to a dealer for transmission repair. Are you keeping the car? If you are selling it why not look for a low mileage unit from a salvage yard? Most have 30 to 90 day warranty that covers the unit but not the labor. I would look for a independent shop with a ASE certified mechanic. I would check his references and check with the Bureau of automotive repair to see if he has any complaints against the shop. Finally get a written estimate. Some mechanics will tell you that they can't give you a exact estimate until they tear into it and see what is the problem. Finally ask him if he will give you a discount for cash. He should at least knock 1 to 3 % off the price.
