Like everything else in life - it's never that simple. Depression can express itself in many different forms. It can effect your moods, eating and sleeping patterns. You might even suffer physical symptoms that could vary from general achiness to fatigue and exhaustion.
So, the answer depends upon how depressed you actually are.
Yes, many people are able to work and function successfully with therapy and/or medication. Others can't and could possibly get
disability because of it.
The medication part is tricky because many have side effects from slight tremors in your extremities to tiredness and a host of others. So many times, the patient is given different medications to see which one works the best and has the least problems for that individual.
My son has taken paroxetine and it made him a little too listless.
He eventually ended up on Wellbutrin and he is in a very competitive field and has done quite well. He does occaisionally have a hand tremor but he feels that its positive effects outweigh the negative.
I hope that helps.

When I was on paroxetine, I found that I was MORE successful than w/out it. I was laid-back enough to converse with just about anybody at work, earned a promotion and a nice raise. I have to admit though, looking back, I think it made me rather manic, and not altogether myself. But yeah, you can be highly successful on paroxetine.

Yes, you can suffer from depression and still be successful, as long as you are getting appropriate treatment (medication and/or therapy). I don't know about paroxetine, but my husband has suffered from depression for many years, takes prozac and is successful in his profession and also a published author.

Sure I managed to be functional most of the time. I had a combo of anxiety and depression and found that Paxil did mellow me out a little too much at times. I finally started sleeping like a normal person but found that I would get sleepy in the middle of the day which is problematic.
