Pittbulls are great dogs, however. They are bred for certian things, usually to be aggressive and they can show aggression with out notice if the situation is right. Your totally right its all about the OWNER. They have to know the breed, to train the breed, and be able to take the responsiblity of the care and confinment of the animals. Also take the heat if one of there dogs did do something wrong. I have a Cane Corso/Pitt Bull cross. He was suppose to be a fighting dog, but despite him being a cross of 2 suspected highly aggressive breeds, he did not want to fight. SO he was used as a bait dog. To train and teach other fighting dogs to attack. He was around 3 years when we got him. Covered in scars, starved, broken bones, and skin infections he was left for dead. He was going to be euthed but something about him struck my heart. I didnt want an aggresive bred dog since I have a houseful of animals and family. With love, training, and understanding he is a well socialized and balanced dog, BUT he is sometimes unpredictable around other dogs. I NEVER leave my gaurd down with him. I never stop training him or dealing with him, he's 9 now and i still dont stop with him.
The problems right now in the hysteria and fear of breeds of dogs like Pitt bulls, Cane Corso, Dogos, Rottwielers, Dobermans, Mastiffs, and other fighting breeds. The hysteria with these breeds is that when they attack and bite, they are capable of killing, and destroying, which is what they were bred for. They dont let go and they love to pack up. This strike the fear of god in the general public.
In fact the most reported breed of dogs that bite according to home owner insurance reports, is Labs, Poodles, and Spaniels. They bit more than any other breed of dog. Now the problem in this is that when one of these breeds bites, they bite and let go, they dont kill, they dont maim, and they dont, always pack up. So its all about public education but unless you can train every one its going to be this way forever.
Taranheart, you and I should form a club lol, I was attacked by a Rottwieler in my job, its was totally my fault and I was the idiot. I never held it against him, and actually adopted him. Unfortunantly he had cancer and died shortly after we reconciled.
FOR those about the kids around pitts comments. My Sigmound, cane corso/pitt X is around kids all the time, I dont worry about the kids as much as I worry about strange dogs coming into my yard. He currently lives with 7 other dogs and hes ok with these but he is always iffy, around new ones.
JOHN J I dont fall in any of your catagories, I have a job, a high IQ, a University degree, I am not a drug addict nor dealer, I am not a redneck, or a dumb a** like you are. Unfornuantly your answer is full of ignorance and predjudice. Its not needed or wanted around here, but we have to tolerate losers like you since its a public sight.

I say, "Ban stupid people, not dogs!" I have a pit/lab mix puppy. I have yet to meet someone who does not actually like him. He loves to wrestle with other dogs and has the combined energy of both a lab and a pit. He is also the easiest dog to train that I have ever had. My wife wants to rescue a full pit puppy next time we decide we are going to get a dog.
Pitbulls take the most hits since the media has made them out to be evil and viscious dogs. Any dog can be made viscious and destructive.
The dog on Little Rascals... a pitbull. The most decorated military dog... a pitbull. The dog credited with the largest drug bust in the USA... a pitbull. Helen Keller (who was deaf AND blind) owned a pitbull. In order to properly take care of a pitbull, educate yourself (as with ANY breed that you might be raising) and you will find that to have a good dog, you simply have to be even more stubborn than they are.

It really upsets me!! Pit Bulls have gotten a bad reputation because they have become some sort of "ghetto status symbol". They are very strong dogs and were originally bred for cattle driving/herding. They are bred to be the best. They are loyal and wonderful competition dogs. The majority of the time any dog attack is called in people automatically say/assume it is a pit bull, when in reality most of the attacks are really committed by chows and mixed breed dogs. Yes pit bulls have attacked and even killed people but I do not think in any way it is fair to categorize the entire breed by these incidents due to the "status" some people have them for. Any dog can be dangerous, agressive, mean and attack. I know pit bulls that are some of the best and sweetest dogs ever. I hate that people use them in those horrible ways! I also hate that they have become a media scapegoat for all to fear. Anyone who has any common sense and knows anything about animals would realize it's all a bunch of BS. There are bad dogs, there really aren't bad breeds (except maybe chows but that's just my personal opinion). Singling out one breed is just like singling out one race of people. When you say pit bulls are outright vicious and not one of the breed is a good dog (you obviously don't know anything) but ask yourself if you can prove that statement beyond a shadow of a doubt (you can't) and realize that you are doing the same thing to these animals that people did to other races. Do you really think it's right?! Sorry, I am passionate about pit bulls and this issue...

I have owned two pitbulls, my first was a female pit, she was a little skittish around other people and her mother was used to fight. We didn't know this when we were given the puppy. We raised her with a lot of love but she was still a little unpredictable. My second was given to me when he was a year old. He was skittish as well. He is now 5 years old and is a big huge baby. I have a jackrussell(8yrs old) which beats up on the pitbull, and he lets him get by with it, so It is a lot of how you raise them but it is also sadly in their bloodlines too. They have the tendency to arise to the bad reputation. My pitbulls never tried to bite anyone but, before i got my male pit neutered he was aggressive towards other dogs that came into our yard.

I love pits. I own a pit boxer.
If you take the time to look up there history you can find out they have had a bad rep for the longest time. They were bred to Kill and fight that is why the breed in here
.
From what I found out back then They used pit bull to attack a tied up bull to tenderize the meat before it is cut up and sold. Dogs that were trained and breed for it were used, some were killed or injured from the hooves or horns of the bull. They thought that letting them attack tthe bulls would do this, but was never prooved to be true and stopped. Later they turned to Dog fighting.
So Pit Bulls were bred for the agresive trait. I think with proper breeding with well tempered pits that this breed would be wll loved again some day

A dogs personality is based on how the owner treats them. Personally I think pitbulls are alsome pets. I raised them for the longest time. So the pit will only be mean if the owner wants them mean! Its not because of the past!!

I think any pit bull breeder should be screened. A healthy, well bred pit is a good dog. A fighting pit, from fighting stock, is not. I know NOBODY I know could handle a fighting pit. Most people raise their pits well, besides the occasional yank and crank owner, and as they are naturally protecticve, I really don't think you should do any protection training...at all.

First off thanks for posting this question.....it funny how many people out there really believe that pit bulls are so loving. I myself is a pit bull breed owner he is 15 weeks old and all blue with gray eyes. I think the responsibility is up to the owner and how the dog is trained. I think that everyone who is downing my favorite dog is just dumb and have no education. your a dumb butt for saying something like that. Get a book and read it!!

i mean really there is potential in all animals, after all dogs are animals, and regardless of the breed, a dog can never be fully trusted.
as for pitbulls , personally i feel along with all other breeds in the "dangerous dog" category should be banned and/or muzzled at all times.
