Finish your degree. It really does not matter in what field you get your AA/BA. Although if you only get an AA, I recommend Justice Studies.

Keep your legal record clean, including traffic offenses.

Keep you credit history clean. Bad credit will disqualify you as fast or faster than some criminal things in your past. Large amounts of credit card debt and/or writing bad checks will really count against you. The debt for school should not hurt you.

Be physically fit. I can't count the number of potential candidates I have seen disqualified because they couldn't do the physical agility test.

One last item. Be completely truthful when you start the process. Tell the background investigator everything, even if it is not on any official record. No matter how bad you think something in your past is, it probably isn't that bad to everyone else. Besides, if you tell the truth and the why of all the incidents, it will definitely be better than lying about it, or waiting until they find out. It is better to be disqualified for something you have done in your past than to be disqualified for lying about it.

Good Luck!

In some cities, to become a police officer you need to have a four year degree in Criminal Justice (these are PD's that are accredited). Other towns require only a GED and the ability to read and write well. You need to have a clean record and you need to be asking a recruiter questions. You also need to be in good physical shape. Each department has specific criteria to meet. Call your recruiter for more information. You can also "try out" for the physical endurance test and see how you do. You may get lucky and pass. Good luck!

Good grades and good health and exercise always help. You can also go for a degree in law enforcement, and you can always apply to crime ridden cities.
