my friend gave me a starter of amish bread and were both wondering where in the world did it originate and does it really have anything to do with the amish??

You got a sourdough starter. It can be started by anyone if they have the recipe for it. A neighbor of mine used to have a home bakery in which she made breads for sale in stores. This was one particular bread she made each day. She would mix up the starter the night before and let it work all night. In the morning she would punch the dough down and start making other loaves until she was ready to form those loaves. It makes a heavier bread than most general brands sold in the market today. It is delicious so bake it up before it stops working. :-)

It is a sour dough starter...been around since like forever. The amish do use it. Great isn't it?

Came with members of a Protestant group who migrated from Europe to the United States and Canada in the 18th century.
