Its a personal choice in doing this. If you think the dog is in terrible pain and you think his quality of life is going downhill then that decision is purely yours. Some people can do it, I personally will do what I can to make him comfortable and let him live out his days. If the dog is in extreme pain and there is absolutely no hope, I will sit with him and hold his paw and with a vet, I would put him to sleep. Mostly I let my animals die on there own of old age if there is nothing wrong with them. I pay the bills and the medications. I figure its what I should do as a good owner and friend to the animal.
Why do we do it to animals? Because most people dont think animals have souls. They dont catagorize them as a human. They dont see them as a sentient being and therefore it wont haunt there souls to kill off the animal. If you believed in Reincarnation you would think long and hard before killing animals. People are diffrent but you can find many people wanting to change rules on Human Euthinization. Just ask Dr. Kevorkian he assisted in many Human Euthinizations. Also killing humans have legal issues is it humane intervention or murder. So far its still consider murder.... till then we cant Euth people.

If you've done all you can for the animal then yes. If it's starting to detoriate and has trouble walking but you haven't taken it to the vet or tried to help him, then no.
putting a pet to sleep is a last resort. think it through first.

I made this tough choice for my dog a few years ago - she was deteriorating and her back legs gave out. It was incredibly hard, but I spared her from suffering from a difficult and inevitable death.
I think humans should have more choices than they do in terminal illness situations, but it needs to be based on the individual's own wishes. Family, friends and doctors should not have to be in the position of making this choice. People should put their wishes clearly in writing long before the situation arises and they should be very specific about what they want. And as long as they have a conscious free will, they should have the option to change their mind.

If you are serious, then it would be humane if the dog has no quality of life.Pain should always be the final straw on you making the decision...We do this for our animals because they are Animals, not HUMANS.Would you want your family to put you down if they decided that you were not an asset to society? Thanks for 2, that is not the answer you wanted, I know.

It is not wrong at all. Did the dog have a good life? Why make the last bit of his life uncomfortable and possibly painful? It is not done to humans because we have walking aides and wheelchairs, we are given meds to ease pain and when we are uncomfortable we can say so and something will be done to fix it.

Your conscience plays a big role in this one. But if you have done everything you can in your power and vet visits, then there is no reason to continue to see it suffering. But on the other hand if it is not suffering any pain and you can still continue to give it a decent attention for the remainder of his life or until it is really suffering then I think you should give it some convalence time.

No it is not wrong, it is an act of mercy. This is not done to humans because we are humans, not animals. A human life has more value than an animal's life.

In my opinion it is wrong to let a dog suffer. Humans can make decisions for themselves, a dog cannot, we as owners are left to decide what we feel is best for our dogs....If I feel my dog is suffering, I would have the vet put it to sleep, now I do feel it is wrong to put them down inhumanely.

No, of course not. If it is obvious the dog is in pain, put it down. It is cruel to keep it alive.
If a person can not handle their pain anymore, afford medication, or help of any kind, I believe they should have a choice whether to be euthanized or not.
