My son got drunk with friends and was walking around the neighborhood opening unlocked cars and taking change. He only got away with about 5 dollars. After 6 months of twice daily breathalizers, community service, rehab, psichiatrist, therapy, 10 trips to court, about $3000.00 in attorney fees and $2000.00 in court costs he is finally on probation.
If he keeps on the straight and narrow for 18 months and carries out various other obligations, he will have a clean record.

I am so greatful that he will not have a criminal record because he was charged as an adult. They said he could have gone to prison.

I just feel like I have been run over by a truck.

If there are any parents out there that have survived something like this, I'd appreciate any words of wisdom and encouragement

Please only serious answers.

Thanks

I have been there and it is so hard on parents.Watching your baby walk out in court especially in handcuffs is heart wrenching. If he stays on the straight and narrow, trust me things will go back to normal and the fact that his record will be clean is a god send. Keep your head up high as this is not a reflection on your parenting, he just got caught doing something tonnes of kids do. You will both be ok.

I haven't been there but I work in the legal field and have been on the other side. It sounds as if your son just used poor judgment on a couple of levels (underage drinking) and (taking what isn't his). It sounds as if you did everything you could for him, but he is the only one who can make the choices to continue to life live the right way. Try to make sure he stays away from the friends he used to hang with when he got in trouble. Keep him busy - get him interested in other activities - volunteering at the animal shelters, volunteering at the library, or hospital, volunteering at a shelter for underprivileged kids. Also he could join a sports program (volleyball is a lot of fun whether you are a kid or adult). Do some family things together! Good luck to you all and God Bless.

I have not been in this situation. But I wish you all the luck in the world. I guess if it were me, I would make sure I knew all about the kids he hangs around with.

i haven't yet, but i have three boys, teen and preteen. just try to be there for him, so he doesn't feel abandoned and hopefully he learned his lesson. i know it can't be easy for you. unfortunatly being the parent you are the one who has to be strong. mabe look around for a support group in your area, it could be real helpful. it will provide you support. good luck.
