I have read the earth will be purified by fire as an interpretation of scripture. I have myself studied little about this. I do know there is no such thing as eternity in hell, even satan will cease to be.

I did know fire is used for purification but it's also represented as judgment. No, I don't think Hell is for purifying souls. Otherwise the Bible would have mentioned an end to eternal damnation.

Hell isn't fire though. Symbolically, yes... but it's not literal. Hell is the grave. But the fire of purification is something else... it's kind of like the saying "When you face the fire" which certainly doesn't mean you are facing a literal fire... it just means when you go through something that is difficult. Which, usually, you end up the stronger for it.

In historic cases, sulfur fumes were particularly used as a fumigant. Burning sulfur served a pragmatic objective in 'purification' and that i have self belief that is how hell were given to be portrayed as being crammed with hearth and brimstone. different religions view hell as an element of purification, so the sulfur fumes could be acceptable. regrettably, Christian hell is an element of punishment, no longer purification, so the symbolic that technique of hearth has been lost.

The refiner's fire in Malachi 3 is for purification. But hell fire is for destroying, not purifying.

Purgatory is for purifying souls. Hell is eternal damnation forever.

THE FINAL PURIFICATION, OR PURGATORY

1030 All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.606 The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:607

thats why they would burn supposed witches because the "fire would purify their souls" Superstions among the Irish peasentry tell of baal fires and how if a cow was sick the would pass a live coal around it or put a live coal under the churn for making butter so that evil witches couldn't steal the cream and butter fo their own purpose

It will take eternity of course you wont get off so easy. Satan is just allowed to jump out and bite Christians in the butt when they get out of line but you real sinners will burn in Hell for eternity.

Hell is eternal punishment, purgatory is temporary purification.

The love of God is a burning fire that's painful for sinners and joy for the elect.
