I have had him almost 2 weeks and he has been doing OK until today. He would not eat his dog food this morning and while I was holding him, his tummy was rumbling so I let him outside to see if he needed to use the bathroom and instead of using it, he started eating grass and leaves.

It's a totally normal reaction to an upset stomach. My dogs do the same thing if they are feeling a little off. Something about the grass settles their little tummies. I would only worry if he goes a couple of days not eating anything and/or there is any significant change in his stool. I would take him in for a check up then. If not let the grass do its work! hope this makes you feel better!

Dogs commonly eat grass, and there are several explanations that have been offered for this behavior.
Many times, dogs will vomit after eating grass. Did they eat grass to make them vomit? Or did they vomit because they ate grass? It is a mystery, but it seems that some dogs may eat vegetation when they have an upset stomach.
Some dogs have certain species of grass or plant material that they will search out and eat. We know a beagle who can pick raspberries faster than his owner.
In any case, grass eating is basically a normal behavior, and is not of concern unless your dog does it excessively.
You might want to change the food you are giving him. He either doesn't like it or its upseting his stomach.

A lot of times dogs will eat grass when they have upset stomaches because it usually makes them throw up.
However, some dogs also just like to eat grass for no real reason. But, judging by what you said he probably just doesn't feel good.

Whenever one of my dogs starts trying to eat grass, they have an upset tummy and are trying to vomit. By eating grass, it helps them to throw up. If it happens more than once, take the pup to the vet for some meds...it could be more serious than just a tummy ache.

i have a 4 month old bull terrier who eats grass all the time. when ever he does his bussiness i find it. grass helps dogs digest food better so he probably had an upset stomach. just make sure if he eats grass that it has no chemicals or anything like that.

In your situation it is definitely an upset tummy. My Jack Russell would only do this when she didnt feel good and needed to puke. My Basset Hound on the other hand, I think he's just part cow. In the summer he will just walk around the yard sniffing and grazing on grass. He doesn't puke either. Go figure?

It's not unusual for dogs to eat grass. It does sound like he has an upset stomach. When you walk him, keep a very close eye on his activites and if you see him trying to eat the grass, gently yank his leash and tell him no. If he's stubborn (like my puppy), remove him from that area.

it means he's not feeling good. the grass will make him throw up which is good. don't let him eat anything else but grass as certain plants are poisonous. if he continues this, take him to a vet. especially if he is very young
