The primary functions of a Military Police unit have little to do with being a police officer. Their primary function, like all military units, is fulfilled in a war time mission. This list is a few, but not all, of them:

1. Main Supply Route (MSR) patrol. In this they check for proper route signage, possible ambush points, road quality etc. This allows for free movement of troops and supplies in the combat area

2. Route Reconnasance. In this they recon roads on the map to allow for proper usage by other units. When I was in Bosnia, most of the maps were made in 1976. We had to add all the changes to the maps for higher up to properly utilize the area.

3. Convoy Escort. In this they guide and protect supply convoys while moving in the area of operations. This is usually accomplished with a squad sized element (3 Humvee's and hopefully a full squad of 9).

4. Traffic Control Point/MSR Observation Point. In this, they set up in one place, usually an intersection of two or more MSR's and control traffic as neccessary. They also track convoys moving through the area to ensure they are getting where they are supposed to go when they are supposed to go there.

MP's also train in direct and indirect assault (attack the enemy), calling for artillery fire and ambushing the enemy, among other things. When deployed in a peace keeping or war time mission they also conduct other aspects of Law Enforcement as neccessary.

When a MP unit is back at their duty station, they conduct training for their war time mission and in most places they are the Law Enforcement for the post to which they are assigned.

Unfortunately, the war time training is the #1 priority for an MP unit. They only get about 4 weeks of Law Enforcement training in AIT. They don't get to go to a police academy unless they are stationed somewhere where that type of training is available by a civillian police academy. Even when it is available, the opportunities are slim. During the training cycle at their regular duty assignment, they usually only get a few refresher courses prior to doing a stint on the road as a LE MP.

All in all they are a very busy MOS for the ARMY. Being an MP does not really help you get a civillian police job. Some eastern and southern agencies will take them, but on the west coast it is more difficult unless you have college or other training to assist your employment goals.
