Aw, everyone (except Cooler than Antifrezz), is making such a big deal of it. The easiest way is simply to break one in half; (or cut it with scissors if you're too weak to break it.) I defy anyone outside of the FBI or CIA or NCIS or one of those to recover anything from that. It would be impossible to glue, tape, stick back together, or otherwise restore the disc so it could be spun at a high enough RPM to be read without the disc (and containing disc drive) flying apart in all directions. If you're worried about the FBI, etc, then you've got more to worry about than what's on your Bruce Springsteen disc.

If you are selling your computer, thoroughly clean your hard drive. Deleting files and reformatting is not enough. Reformatting does not overwrite every sector, and private information can remain retrievable. Use a secure delete or disk wiping utility to overwrite every sector on all hard drives. Be sure to use a utility that supports the U.S. DoD standard of seven passes or wipes. While this method is good enough for most people, be aware that the only absolute way of destroying all traces of everything your hard drives is to have these disks degaussed (demagnetized) and physically destroyed.
Suggested: BCWipe, Evidence Eliminator, or SDelete.

Magnetic disk or CD?

In either case, I'm a fan of taking a strong pair of scissors and cutting it to bits. This won't actually destroy 100% of the data, but it's close enough.

For a floppy, you can demagnetize the disk by using a tape head demagnetizer, which subjects the disk to a strong alternating magnetic field.

For a CD-ROM, you can bake it in a microwave oven on high for ten seconds. It would be easier just to break it into two pieces though.

Remove the metal disks, and scratch them with a knife or key. I've always seen it done with scratches from the middle edge to the outer edge, maybe half a dozen around the disk, on both sides.

Swipe over it with a refrigerator magnet then crease the disk in four places Irretrievable after that.

Take a knife, sissors or sharp object and make several deep scratches running from the outside to the inside ring.

Melt the surface of the disc so it warps and bubbles.
