It's because strict family religion doesn't make much sense. Science DOES make sense. Science can be proven. Religion cannot.

Atheism is on the rise these days.
A few possible reasons.
1. Atheism is not as frowned upon these days as it once once. 50 years ago, a person who publicly announced he or she was an atheist would be ostracised by society.
2. Science is a bigger part of education today. A lot of people will look at science and look at religion and see a discrepency. Science produces more positive results for society than religion.
3. It is easier to read and research the bible these days. Before the internet, the only to find information about the bible was to ask your local church about it. Of course, they will only give it a positive spin. Today, it is ever so easy to find people critical of the bible.
4. The hypocrits in religion. Those who preach one thing and do another is burning people out on religion. A lot of people are not seeing religion as an answer to problems but instead a cause of problems.
5. Finally, religion is not really making it self attractive to kids. If someone expects you to join a group that tells you how to live and threatens you with an eternity of torture if you do not agree with them, kids are going to want to stay away from that group. Religion needs to give itself a major makeover. Till then, it is going to drive away more and more people.

Many kids turn to atheism because it makes sense. Creationism has no proof and cannot be proven.
P.S. I am an atheist. I went to church for the first time last weekend(i am 14). I was shocked. Many of the people who went to church were being obnoxious. Women were wearing thongs, children were flipping each other off, and some adults were texting on their phone. I had more respect for a religion that I did not believe in than the people who did believe the religion.

That's one of the reasons I have found why people turn to Atheism. That, and the fact that sooooooo many people will say "Oh, if you just believe, you'll be healed" and when they aren't healed, they either think there isn't a God or God doesn't love them the way he/she/it loves all these other people who were healed, etc... so on and so forth... you get the drift. It's a hard thing to listen to a pastor or someone else tell someone that their parent isn't going to die, God told them she would live... and then attend a funeral 3 days later for the woman that was supposed to be brought back by God (my best friends mother). This is enough to make anyone lose faith. People need to quit telling others what "God" is going to do for them... they have no idea what is going to happen... and it doesn't do a damn thing to ease the other person to tell them, what to me looks like, an outright lie.

Satan knoweth that he hath but a short time.A spiritul war is taking place on earth, and the human agents that are luciferians happen to control all forms of media since the early 1920s.The 1960s was a turning point in history whereby an entire generation was illuminized and now we live in an era with no moral compass.

If you think about it all children are technically born atheists but it's the family and other outside influences that turn them to religions......and then as they get older and start to actually think for themselves then they may turn to atheism.

I think its the lack of "family ties" in this country to blame for alot of this generations problem. Parents have no time to sit with their children and ask how their day was anymore let alone sit and teach them that "there is a god".
I think alot of todays kids are raised "empty" void of morals, manners and religion.

Don't delude yourself, recent polls have found some 80% of the population in the U.S. believes in an intellegent supreme being (Newsweek). Your question "...so many children" is wrong in it's assumption, so it invalidates the rest of the question.

What hoards of children do you know that I don't? I haven't noticed children flocking to atheism. In fact, children are generally indoctrinated into the faith of their parents and the children DON'T break free until they're much older.

If a child is raised in a christian/religious family I find it hard to believe that they turned to atheism.
Most children are a product of their environment.
It's the main reason that Christianity is still so prevalent. If you subject a child to something for 18+ years and confine them to it they will probably believe it for life. Much like a abused child is more likely to abuse their children.
It almost amounts to child abuse.
