My husband is in the Air Force, and we are stationed currently at Minot AFB, ND. I hate it here!! My husband mentioned something about Base of Preference, but we aren't 100% certain on how it works. Any help would be appreciated! I want to leave here someday!!

yiu have to wait until you re-enlist? My husband signed up for 6 years, and our orders here are for 24mos. So at the 24 mos. time, can he exercise base of preference, or do they just keep us here for 6 years? (he is planning on staying in for a career)

at the end of his 24 months, he can request to go elsewhere. But the chances of him being able to PCS before then are slim to none.

His job will have the biggest impact as to where he can be sent. belive it or not, there are afew( in every branch) that are som specialized that you literally can be in the same place for the entire enlistment.

I have heard rumors that the AF is not letting people PCS in less than 4 years now, though.

With my Husband's Job(Navy) he has to be in the same spot for at least three years before he can even think about requesting a PCS

The USAF has a Base Preference data form you can fill out.

You list up to 5 AFB's that you would like to be stationed at and if you are a volunteer for an overseas assigment.

Generaly, the USAF is not going to do a stateside to stateside transfer unless you reenlist or get promoted and there is no need for your new rank at your present base.

The easist way to get a transfer is to volunteer for an overseas assigment, You ask for a short tour (15 months) , a long tour or an extended long tour.

Dependents are not authorized for short tours.

The risk is, once you volunteer for an overseas assignment, your name goes to the top of the list and they can send you anywhere they want to, not just to the base's you volunteered for.

It also depends on what his AFSC is and what bases have those AFSC's.

When I was in the USAF, my AFSC only had 13 bases to be assigned to, it went up to 17 by the time of my ETS.

You can also do a base swap.

Thats where you find someone in your AFSC at the same rank currently stationed at another base, who wants to be stationed at your base.

Both commanders have to approve the swap and you must take leave and pay your own moving cost.

1) 5 of each 2) chances you'll get one on your list somewhat decent chances you get number one very slim 3) depends on the job you get you may be limited on what base you can go to but if I had the choice of any base I would choose Hickam AFB HI, McChord AFB WA or Luke AFB AZ But I can only go to Minot AFB, ND or Barksdale AFB, LA

Base of Preference (BOP)
This program authorizes a BOP for first-term airmen in conjunction with the Career Airman Reenlistment Reservation System (CAREERS) retraining, or an in-place BOP for career airmen or first-term airmen not retraining under CAREERS.

First-term airmen are afforded the opportunity to apply for a BOP in conjunction with CAREERS retraining. Career airmen may submit an in-place BOP application after completing three years, five months on station. First-term airmen not retraining under CAREERS may also apply after completing 17 months on station. (Note: consecutive in-place BOPs are not authorized.)

The key factors you must know are:

member's vulnerability for overseas selection is a determining factor in approving/disapproving in-place BOP requests -- know your vulnerability!
all approvals result in a 2-year assignment deferment

We,, AFTER he gets back from Korea, :((
you are pretty much assured choice of bases. Just make sure that the choices are reasonable, sometimes the closest to home isn't reasonable because if his AFSC isn't utilized there, so it becomes a waisted choice.

They'll move him after 24 months, but he'll have very little say in where he goes. When you're reenlisting, you call the shots at a much greater level.

When you re-enlist you can re-enlist for Duty Station of Choice...what it means is you tell them three or four places you would like to go, and they call DAF and see if there is anything open there...you get the first one with an opening is the one you get...
