I am a reformed alcoholic now of nine years of sobriety. Can somoeone of great understanding tell me why it is alot of foods these days have wine sauce in the ingredients? i.e. a frozen dinner I just ate had that in the ingredients as well as some other foods I have had in the past. Now, I still eat these foods and realize this in no way should question my years of sobriety now...but I just want to make sure that it is alright for a reformed alcoholic to eat foods with this in the ingredients?

Like I say, I am not going to be one to live in fear and realize that even if at times if the alcohol isn't cooked out and evaported this still shouldn't question my years of sobriety...and If i really were eating it for that intent I would go to the neares liquor store and pick up a case of beer...I just wanted to get other feelers out to what others may think? I would also probably go as far as eating it if I were in a restaurant if it were added without knowing..but who knows.

Enjoy your reformed life and eat what you want. Unless you are afraid of drinking the wine before it hits the frying pan you'll be fine, it does burn like everyone has said and just adds flavor.
Better to have a vice for good meals, give youreslf alot of credit and a pat on the back for being 9 years away from the past :-)
Now go eat!!!

I am a recovering alcoholic too with 8 1/2 years of sobriety. I agree that you certainly aren't relapsing if you eat a meal with wine sauce. Despite that, I myself try to avoid eating anything that I *know* has alcohol in it, even if it's cooked off. It just doesn't feel right for me. So when I go to a restaurant I won't order anything that has a wine sauce or is obviously made with wine (i.e. veal marsala). And I would never eat anything that has booze in it that isn't cooked off (deserts are sometimes full of kahlua or grand marnier).

But I am sure that many times there is a little bit of booze in a gravy or something, and I figure if I don't know it and can't taste it, then I don't care. So most of the time it isn't a big deal.

Happy sobriety! Isn't it great?

Almost all alcohol will have been cooked out of the sauce before you eat it. It's mostly the sugars fromthe wine left in the final dish. And in the vast majority of sauces only a little bit is used in the first place. I don't drink anymore either and after a few months of not tasting wine I had a scampi dish at an italian place. They hadn't cooked the wine for long enough and to my now sensitive palate the whole dish tasted doused in liquor! You're overthinking things a bit - be proud of yourself. You sound like you know that a little thing like some reduced wine in a frozen dinner isn't enough to knock you off the wagon.

Most - but not all alcohol in wine evaporates off in the cooking process. I think you will be OK eating food prepared with a wine sauce. The only contraindication would be if you were taking the drug "Antibuse" even a small amount of alcohol will cause you to fell terribly sick. Congrats on your sobriety....

I don't believe you are in any danger of going back to drinking because of any wine used in foods. Wine flavor enhances the taste of many foods, but the alcohol is removed or lost thru the preparation process. even in restaurants. Enjoy your food, and don't worry about it. Congratulations on getting rid of the booze. I was a beeraholic, but quit 16 years ago. I didn't realize how much fun you could have sober.

Wine or other alcohol adds (or can add) a lot of good flavor to foods and when wines, etc., are cooked, the alcohol is cooked out of it so it is NOT an alcoholic dish.
