The military is a way of life. It's a community of similar values. I grew up as an Air Force brat, and I forget what it's like to be in a military family until I visit my parents in the RV park on base.

The drill and ceremonies really sets a standard of behavior and order. It gives an order and a level of respect that everyone can follow.

You can't have a good military without organizations and protocols, even if some of them seem outdated or old fashioned.

I was taught how to obey my parents, honor the flag, and respect the laws of my country. That's something I don't see in the rest of the non military population.

Well, from a pragmatic viewpoint, drill and ceremonies provide an organized way to conduct troop movement. Customs and courtesies instill discipline and cohesion.
