My fiancee and I are considering these places for our honeymoon and need to choose one: Washington DC, Salem, MA, and Gatlinburg, TN. The trip will be a weekend visit in May. We're on a budget.
We like being in cities, but I also like the idea of having a cabin with a hot tub and pool table in Gatlinburg. What do you think?

Just to give you some insight into our personalities: we like museums a lot (as for DC, I was looking forward to the Folger Shakespeare Library). So, Williamsburg, DC, and Salem are being consider for their historical value.
Going to Gatlinburg seems out of character for me, but I like the idea of relaxing for a couple of days. I'm not sure what there is to do there though when we get tired of being couped up in a cabin.

We were married and honeymooned in Gatlinburg. We had a awesome cabin...with anything you could think of in it. Gatlinburg is a huge tourist attraction. May is a busy time of year too. There are tons of thing to do. We love to hike... and you can hike to some beautiful sites!!! There are waterfalls everywhere and you might even see the bears ( we were there in OCT and saw 7... including being about 25 yard froma mother and her 3 cubs). The good thing about getting the cabin is you can buy food at the local grocery stores and cook in the fully stocked kitchen in the cabin. It will save you lots of money... trust me. There is also a theme park a few miles north in Pigeon Forge. If you go online to the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce site they will send you all sorts of information...including discounts and coupons. For cabins, check out the Preserve Resort or Cove Mountain Realty. Both are outside the city and have tremendous views. Good luck and best wishes.

Washington DC is great... especially if you are looking into the historical aspect of it. There are a lot of museums, historical sites or other places that have to do with our history. I've been once and I can't wait to go back so I can spend more time at each place. If you want the relaxing aspect of a hot tub and such, just find a nice hotel where you can do all those things in the evening or on a day you just want to relax.
Good luck with all the planning and congrats!

D.C. might not be the best place to go on a budget, aside of the fact that the museums and monuments are free. Everything else there is really expensive. If your honeymoon is all about visiting museums, then it is a great pick. Otherwise... not so much.
I don't know about the other two places, so I'm only good here for eliminating one place if the "budget" matters much and you're not into museums.
That said, another alternative to consider is St. Augustine, Florida. Cheap. Beautiful. On the ocean. Great weather in May. And very romantic. It is also a very brief drive from several large cities, including Jacksonville a mere 15-20 minutes away. That's where we went, and I wouldn't pick another place on earth... unless I WASN'T on a budget!
Regardless of where you go, have fun! And congratulations!

I think for a honeymoon someplace quiet and out of the way would be more romantic than being in a city. Dc isnt all that fabulous in my opinion. If you want a sort of comprimise, perhaps Williamsburg would be an idea also (I live near williamsburg and have been there many times) It is a bit out of the way...sort of old fashioned because of all the historical stuff there. Theres tons to do there--historical sites shopping there is even Bush gardens amusement park near by if you like that sort of thing. My parents went to williamsburg on their honeymoon and they loved it. It is a nice combination of out of the way and romatinc and having lots to do.

All three are fun cities... but I have heard Gatlinburg can be pretty romantic. DC can be pretty busy with people and may not be as laid back as Gatlinburg. Mass is nice in May, maybe a nice Bed and Breakfast up there would be romantic. Good luck making your decision.

Of those 3, Gatlinburg would be most like a honeymoon. Go for it.

For a week I would say a city but for a weekend you want a big comfortable bed and the hot tub.

I would say Gaitlingburg, TN. It seems like it would be the more cozy and comfortable for a weekend.

Go to mexico. There are plenty of locations in mexico that are cheap and beautifull. Would be a lot more fun then washington dc. Just my input.
